Two years ago, Emily Burnham, had an epiphany about the shallowness of her life. And she made it her mission to become a different person…a better woman. Out from under the controlling thumb of her mother, Emily is tasting the real world for the first time. And she likes it.
Nixon Caldwell has served his time in the Marine Corps, surviving two brutal tours in Afghanistan. He is back home, surrounded by what he likes best…isolation. It’s certainly the best way to avoid confrontation of the consuming guilt that is weighing him down.
When an accident brings Emily and Nix together, he soon learns he is not the master of his own fate. Struggling with his own pain, Nix tries to guard himself against Emily’s charms. He wants her in his bed, but he doesn’t want her in his heart.
Having grabbed life by the horns, Emily wants it all. But is she willing to accept just the small part of himself that Nix is offering? Can she reach the part of his soul that he has deemed to be Off Limits?
This review is a the second in a series of three (so far) books. My first review was on Off Sides, the books are not continuations of one another except for the fact that small characters are then spun off into a new book…
In the second Off series book by Sawyer Bennett we are reintroduced to Emily Burnham (you remember her right…Ryan’s bitchy little sister). In Off Limits Emily has turned over a new leaf and is determined to leave the rich snotty brat she once was behind her. She is becoming a sports writer (mommy and daddy don’t know this yet) and she has the chance to interview Linc Caldwell of the New York Rangers. As she leaves his house she literally runs into none other than…
Nix Caldwell….sexy, tattooed, ex marine, brother to Linc. Emily backs into him and ruins his precious motorcycle. She offers to pay outright to fix it (to avoid losing her insurance) and when her mother cuts off her trust fund she must figure out a way to pay Nix back. They come to an agreement that Emily can help Nix organize his “office” to work off her debt.
“When she’s here, I can’t help but look at her every minute or so, just to see if the expression on her face has changes, or if her hair has shifted. When her subtle jasmine perfume touches my nose, I think about her lying naked in a bed of flowers. This shit is driving me fucking crazy and it’s got no place in my life. It’s not who I am.”
I could understand where he was coming from, it was obvious that he was battling some pretty serious demons and I’m sure a relationship wouldn’t help that at all. I kept trying to talk to him, yes through my Kindle, to tell him to wise up and give in!
Although Nix runs hot and cold Emily persists. Emily offers a no strings attached, purely sexual relationship because she needs to be close to him. This sounded like a good plan to me and good lord was is steamy! Emily’s prior experiences were nothing like what Nix gave her…
“Nix has no mercy. He licks, kisses, sucks and plunges with his lips…with his tongue…with his fingers. I’m vaguely aware of my head thrashing and when I look down at his glorious head working between my legs, I notice that my hands have fistfuls of his hair clenched tightly. He doesn’t seem to care.”
As the two grow closer together Nix finally begins to open up. Things are going well and their agreement is changing, whether they want it to or not. Nix and Emily care for each other until something that Emily does changes it all. I’m not going to give any spoilers but WOW I was not expecting what happened. My heart was breaking for the two of them.
I was glad to see the new Emily in this book and Nix, well….schmexy all the way! The next book in line is Off The Record, my review and release event will be coming VERY soon!
