I’ve been thinking about this post for sometime now. We recently saw a post regarding what gets shared (or not shared) in the reading community. I’m not sure that people really understand just what goes in to running a blog like Schmexy, or any blog for that matter. I am a mother of two, my husband and I both work full time – working almost opposite hours of one another. I want to share what a typical day looks like for me. These are the just the basics of what I do, there is always more on top of this…
A Day in the Life of Schmexy Jesey….
The alarm goes off, it’s 3:40am. I have to leave the house at 4:20am to get to work on time. While I’m getting ready I check my Facebook messages to see what I missed after I went to bed last night around 8pm. There is always at least 1 message but usually it’s 2-3. Authors, PAs, PR companies, other bloggers, it varies. I respond quickly before I leave and head out to start my day.
At 7:30am I take my 15 minute break with my crew at work. I check in with my co-bloggers to be sure that everything is on track for the day. I then respond to another message or two before I head back to work.
Mid-morning it’s time for my official lunch break. I have a half an hour to myself, or do I? If I’m lucky I can scroll my personal Facebook page for a few minutes or check in with my husband. Then there is that nagging little red circle with a number in it, it’s hovering over the icon for my Facebook messenger. Sure I could ignore it, but then when I get home that number will be doubled and I’ll still have to deal with it. So while I eat my lunch, I type, I check the calendar, I schedule posts, I work out details for all things Schmexy. Break is over quickly and it’s back to work.
1:30pm hits and it’s time to go home. It’s been a long 8 hours on my feet walking and lifting all day. I usually voice message with Roxie on my commute and make a game plan for the rest of the day. She tells me what she has already accomplished and it lets me know what I will have to work on when I get home. I get home and settled around 2:30pm, at this point I have an hour and a half before it’s time to go get my kids from the bus. In this short amount of time I update our sales page, add new releases to the Schmexy New Releases post and I check the gmail (aka the Black Hole). While I work I respond to more messages, I update All Things Schmexy to add that days author as an admin, I make sure they have everything that they need and that we are good to go for the night.
4:30pm and I’m back home again with the kids in tow. The kids are have their snack and take care of the dog while I hop on the computer for a few more minutes before homework time starts. I try to stay offline while they are working on it, but it’s virtually impossible if I want to keep caught up and not get backed up.
From this point on my day is a blur of homework, dinner, dishes, showers, Schmexy, cheerleading, laundry, more Schmexy. I get a takeover started and keep an eye on it for an hour while we finish our family tasks for the evening. Finally by 8pm my kids have tucked me in to bed, yes I go to bed before them, and I should be going to sleep. But what do I do, I check my messages one more time to be sure that I am done for the night. I know that it’s not over and that I will wake up to more work but that’s the life of a blogger.
Now, think about what you just read up there…..anywhere in there did it say that I picked up my kindle and read?? Nope. I used to be able to read 3-4 book a week, now I’m lucky if I read 1 a week. Jen and Roxie read more than me but we are all reading less then we used so that we are able to bring you everything that we do.
You see the list is never ending for us. We strive to bring our followers the most up to date information that we are sent or that we can find by scouring Facebook and Gmail. I have a schedule book that I use to keep organized and check things off as I go. Each and everyday I post on IG and Twitter, I check the gmail (which we get a minimum of 30 new emails in a day), I update the sales page and the new release post. Then there are the days that I have to set up Facebook. We each take turns setting up a day at a time. Every three days it is my turn to schedule posts, on a busy day (mostly Monday and Tuesdays) we share a new release or a sale or a cover reveal every hour on the hour. From 7am to 9pm we post, bringing you new authors, new stories to read, and new book boyfriends to swoon over. Up to 15 posts a day, sharing All Things Schmexy with our followers. Hours upon hours of work every day, every night and every weekend.
We share as much as we can, knowing that there are so many different tastes out there. Not everyone will love what we love or hate what we hate. We use our time to bring you anything and everything that we can that we feel is relevant to Schmexy Girl Book Blog and the reading community. Some of our favorite authors are people that maybe some of you have not heard of yet, but we want to change that. I’m a cheerleader for the newbies and the underdogs, I like to give new people a chance because you know what…once upon a time Schmexy was a tiny little blog started by two girls from Jersey that just loved to read. Now we are three girls living in PA, NY and FL with a bond like sisters. If we can introduce readers to new authors, something special may be formed and THAT is what makes this worth it.
We are coming up on 4, yes FOUR, years of blogging as Schmexy Girls. It has been an amazing experience, one that I personally would not trade. I do not regret starting this blog and making it what it is today. I have spent countless hours away from my family working on the computer. I have spent weekends away to go to signings to “network” and meet the new friends that I have met through blogging. While it feels like the work is never ending, I almost hope that it never ends. I hope that I never stop finding new authors and more readers to share them with. While I may never have the time to read 95% of what we share I will continue to add their books to my 50 mile long TBR and just hope that one day I can quit my “real” job and read full time.
Please know that we do all that we can to share each and every thing that comes our way. We love what we do and hope that you love the results <3 We are thankful for all of the support that we have gotten over the years. It makes us smile knowing that we have maybe helped an unknown author get a little bit of exposure. The likes, the shares, the comments and the friendships mean the world to us, we wouldn’t be Schmexy without the authors and readers that have found us and stuck by our sides.
Thank you for following us and taking the time to read this!
