From the New York Times bestselling author of Collide and Pulse comes a gritty new novel about a shattered young woman who unexpectedly falls for two best friends.
They were a storm I never saw coming, an unforeseen heartbreak on the edge of a dangerous cliff.
Amber Moretti’s life changes in the span of minutes. An orphaned outsider, she is desperate to start fresh the moment she walks onto campus. In the time it takes to cross the university’s dining hall, she meets two men who bring color, air, and light to her darkened world.
They became my addiction, each a needle to my next hit, my high.
Brock Cunningham’s appeal is dizzying, a potent force Amber can’t deny. A green-eyed smooth talker, he instantly attracts Amber. It doesn’t take long for him to consume her every thought, her every breath.
Ryder Ashcroft, a blue-eyed, tattooed, and pierced bad boy, turns Amber off immediately—that is, until he kisses her, stealing a piece of her heart, her soul.
They were as opposite as fire and ice, yet I ached for them equally.
Never knowing she could be broken down in so many unexpectedly beautiful yet petrifying ways, Amber finds herself falling for both men.
Immoral? Maybe. I say undeniable. Uncontained.
But one devastating event changes everything, shattering each of their lives…and Amber isn’t sure she can recover from it.
Amber to Ashes was a story that I’ve been waiting to read and dive into for some time. Since the synopsis was released, this book has been on my radar. Gail McHugh is one of my favorites, so of course I waited patiently. Now, that I have this book in my claws, I dug in and didn’t come up for air. And what did I get….perfection!!!
Gail did exactly what she does…she writes a story with depth, creates characters that have layers, and twists in some fucked up crazy plot and expects us to read, finish and move on with life.
Needless to say, I am suffering from a book hangover.
Let’s put aside the crazy plot and let’s talk about the three characters in this book. We have Amber Moretti; orphaned due to the death of her parents and now living with two people willing to give her a normal life. Unfortunately Amber’s past will always haunt her, and she drags her ghosts with her to college. This girl is not your typical heroine. She’s rough around the edges, and I instantly was intrigued. She’s badass to the core and has big balls. Gail pulled out all the stops when she created Amber. And because she’s so complex, it makes for an interesting heroine. Unfortunately for her, and without trying to give too much away, she does fall for two friends; Brock and Ryder.
Who would love a heroine who would allow this to happen? Well, me. And let me tell you why….because this story is the real deal. This book doesn’t get any more raw and real. When you have two men like Brock and Ryder fighting for your attention, you’re torn.
And that’s exactly what Gail’s goal here is, she wants to f*ck with your head, I am sure of it. She delivers Brock and Ryder on a platter, and says, “here you go. Two men that are perfectly flawed in so many ways. Fall in love with them…but don’t get too attached, because soon I’m gonna snatch that shit from you, and crush your heart and tear it out with a spoon.”
Let’s talk about Gail’s writing style. Well, she’s in a league of her own here. She’s fresh, and descriptive in the most beautiful way possible. Her words haunt you. As I sit here and think about the ride I just took, my heart aches and I’m all choked up. Not sure about you, but I’m Team Brock. Yeah I picked a team. And this is why….
“My hearts no less bulletproof than yours. Believe me. But if you feel like you have nothing, then you have nothing to lose, right? Give yourself a shot and being my…different. “
That is why I gave Brock a shot, because I feel him. He’s broken, and alone and he needs her. I said I wouldn’t give spoilers, but damn it this is my review. And if I wanna push Brock then I will…
Doesn’t mean I don’t love Ryder, because I did, I do. He’s a beautiful human being, and gorgeous beyond belief. And can be perfect at times, and say the right things. Flip the coin and he’s a big dick. Yeah both these boys are putty in your hands.
The friendships, the love, the lies…it’s all there. The danger, the angst, the passion…THE SEX….OH AND THE SEX…YEAH THAT’S THERE TOO. Oh My word, Gail writes some of the best sex I have ever read, hands down. There is NOT one single person that has read this book and said, UMM, yeah she did okay in that department. Yeah, UMM…NO!! She knocked that part right out the park!!!
When this all wrapped up though, I was left with a void that can only be filled with the continuation of this story.
I can’t say enough about Amber to Ashes. It’s a must read, possibility one of the most heart breaking, well written, original and HOT as heck stories I’ve read this year. Period. Trish Mint Approved and it gets more than 5 HOLLAS!!
