Dr. Phoenix Reid isn’t who she seems…
Everyone knows a phoenix rises from the ashes. What they don’t talk about are the people she drags with her into the fire.
I thought one hot night with Max Hallowell was harmless. I never expected it would force me to face my past or bring back the man who swore he’d never let me go. Now Max wants to help me. Wants to save me. But if I let him, he’ll be destroyed. I can already smell the flames.
A woman with a secret past. A man determined to protect her. A dangerous passion that could cost them both everything.
Playing with Fire is the first in a new series of standalone novels featuring the New Hope characters Lexi Ryan fans have come to love. While you wait for Nix and Max’s story, explore Love Unbound, the collection of books set in Lexi’s New Hope world.
*Note: Each series can be read on its own, but for the chronology purists, the reading order is below.
“Do you believe a person can do a bad thing and still be good?”
For those of you who are Lexi Ryan fans, you will most likely agree with me when I say, we’ve ALL been waiting for Max’s HEA. Max has always intrigued me and how can you not feel sorry for him. Always falling in love with the wrong woman; a woman we can never have. Now he’s attracted to Nix. She’s always been an enigma to me. We never truly knew anything about her. Well, now we know. And HOLY Shit is this story worth telling.
Lexi Ryan has effectively wrapped this crazy story up in one fireball of a novel.
First I will start off by saying I LOVED Nix’s character; she’s smart, she’s a loyal friend to the crazy girls of New Hope, and of course she’s beautiful. But Nix has secrets and more than anything, I was sooo curious to see what they were. I will never spoil in my review but I will say this………I was NOT expecting this story to turn out the way it did.
I can’t tell you how many times I asked myself, “what the fuck is going on?” I found myself googling terms and then after my findings I was like, OH, of course!! I’m not surprised Lexi Ryan is trying to give me a heart attack!! She always does this; and by “this” I mean write the most intricate and original plots and throws in the crazy twists and turns that keep your stomach in knots.
As crazy as this story was, I fell in love with Max and Nix. They truly don’t have love on their side in this one. And so many different aspects of life are pushing them away from each other. But Max, he’s the driving force in this story. He’s the one who pushes for this relationship to work.
“I don’t want you to be my prisoner.” I trace her bottom lip with my thumb. “I want you to be my girl.”
Nix not only needs the push, she needs hope. She’s a loner, and let’s nobody in. Makes me sad for her. Lexi really draws you in and makes you feel all the loneness that Nix has experienced in her life, and has felt in the past.
Oh but Max, that man is the ultimate. He’s kind, and giving, and such a good man and father to his little girl. A man like Max deserves a HEA.
We still get all the characters in her previous stories, which is great, because you are kept in the loop with their stories.
There were times when I was reading this alone in my living room, late at night, and honestly felt the need to switch on the lights. Scared!! Hells yeah!!! Again, this story was definitely not what I had expected. Nonetheless, one of the BEST, entertaining, loving and scary stories Lexi has given us. Lexi always blows me away with her writing. It’s why I always come back for more.
The “New Hope posse” are some of favorites and I will always read about these characters. Or anything that Lexi Ryan decides to give her fans.
This is a MUST read ladies!!!! 5 stars and a frightening 5 HOLLAS!!!
