A Schmexy Journey
Where to begin? How about a year ago. A love of books and a friendship sparked an idea. What if, just what if people would read our opinions on books? We read so much and have so much to say, why don’t we start…a BLOG?! We shall call it – Schmexy Girl Book Blog!!
It was a fun idea that turned into so much more. The learning curve that we had to figure out was frustrating and disheartening at times. Could we really do this? I was working full time (at a new job), I have 2 young children, and my husband was working nights (making it easy to read into the wee hours of the morning). With just the two of us, Amy and I were determined to do this and do it well. We spent countless hours doing research, afternoons spent on our computers while the kids played and the husbands worked the BBQ. Did I want to quit at some points, absolutely! Would I ever leave Schmexy, absolutely not!!
I’m not going to lie and say that starting a blog is easy. No, scratch that. Starting the blog was the easy part, keeping up with it and making it grow was the tough part. We had to put ourselves out there, find our style, message people that we had never met in person. We were determined to have something up on the blog at least 5-6 days a week. That meant that each of us had to read and review 3 books a week. Looking back I have no idea how we did it. There were many sleepless nights spent reading and character casting, there were fights with our husbands and time away from our loved ones.
The question that I got the most was “What do you get out of it?” The answer is simple yet complicated…nothing yet everything. Amy and I were not out to make money on this (well, just enough to pay to keep the blog running). We don’t do this for a paycheck, or recognition. This is something that has become part of who we are, we are Schmexy. Not a day goes by where I don’t say that word out loud (who wouldn’t say it, it’s FUN!)
What I have gotten out of this means so much to me. Experience of getting to write almost everyday whether it be a review, a Facebook post, or a personal chat with a fan/author/co-blogger. Friendships with people that I have NEVER met in person but that I would be lost without if I didn’t talk to them everyday. Family, yes these girls are my extended family. We laugh and cry together, get mad at each other and get frustrated, we even cause trouble together (quite often too!) but I wouldn’t be the blogger that I am without them by my side.
It has been so amazing to grow to 15, 000+ fans in a year…..that to me is totally insane, there are over 15, 000 people that know who I am! One of my favorite experiences was going to the NYC Author Event last July. Amy and I had been blogging for just over 2 months. At the after party, we heard someone addressing us and turned around to see a smiling face saying, “Oh my god!! You’re Jesey and Amy from Schmexy Girls!!” I think we were stunned into silence (which for those of you that know us, that doesn’t happen often). We were being fangirled over…really?!
And so it goes, here we are, 1 year later, countless reviews, book boyfriends and blog posts done and our duo is now a quintet! Trish, Jennifer, and Ashley have rounded us out and have made our family bigger. So girls, I just want to say that I FLOVE you all!! Thanks for all of the learning experiences, late night chats, and shoulders to cry on!
