Life can be cruel. People can be ruthless and evil. The world can be cold and uninviting. No one knows these things better than Josephine Geroux. By her own definition, she is a twenty-five year old “nobody with nothing,” and she is content to stay that way. Growing up an orphan has made her tough and indifferent to the people around her until she meets a strangely familiar man with a face that haunts her for reasons she can’t understand.
Despite the pain that will inevitably ensue, she makes it her mission to discover what parts of her tragic puzzle she is missing. On her journey to discovering why the she feels an alarming connection to an absolute stranger, her greatest fear is reawakening the demons and darkness from the past that will surely overtake her if she lets her guard down.
Little does Josephine know that the past should be the least of her worries. She is toying with a man who has already broken her heart once. She just doesn’t realize it.
Although she makes it a point to avoid interactions with others, Josephine’s life becomes entangled with the enigmatic stranger. Before she realizes it, she has given herself over to the one person who is close enough to wreck her.
WOW!! If I could give it 10 stars I would!!! I was lucky enough to read a review that said the cliffhanger on this book left her shaking, so I opted to wait until the second book came out before reading. Now that it is out, go purchase it now and thank me later ;)
Josephine has been dealt the absolute worst hand. Her life SUCKS… constantly! Nothing comes easy, she struggles but never complains. She is exactly what I want in a lead female character. She is a victim but doesn’t act like it. She takes her lumps and goes on. She meets Damon by literally bumping into him. They are instantly attracted to each other and Jo decides the chemistry is worth a good one night stand. My heart broke for her because she was so afraid to love anyone. Fear drove her to think she should just be alone, protecting herself from ever having to suffer loss again. While I have never suffered even a 10th of what she did in terms of loss I still felt like I could connect with her. I mean we are all afraid of heart ache!
Enter sex god Damon! He is strong and throughout the story I fell more and more in love with him. He meets Jo and to avoid all spoilers the relationship starts when they have dinner after meeting. Instantly he is connected to her and wants to take care of her, which she resists constantly. Damon tries to take away her pain and make sure she doesn’t have to hurt anymore. He loves Jo with all her pain and doubts. Of course he can’t stop it all, and you again fall more in love with him when he helps her through yet another painful situation. Their banter had me laugh, and the pain made me cry, and the sex made me swoon.
They fit each other and Josephine is terrified of allowing him to love her. She has literally lost everything and feels alone. It is easier for her to feel that way, it avoids her having to feel loss and pain. She can’t fight all of her feelings though, and Damon provides her with hope.
“I feel like my world is crumbling beneath my feet but Damon walks in and I have something to grab onto. It’s frightening and comforting all in the same.”
Here is where I thought I had started to piece more and more of what was happening, but ummm yeah TOTALLY did not see this coming!!! J.L. Mac totally takes you on a ride and there is no freaking way I could have predicted what the hell was going to happen. I was definitely correct in one part but so wrong on the rest.
The ending literally had me sit up (at 2 am) with tears STREAMING down my face and screaming NO NO NO NO NO OMG NO!!! Here is when I thank the amazing reviewer who told me to wait, because I IMMEDIATELY (at 2:15 am) started the next book Restore Me by J.L. Mac!
