When I first met him I resisted.
Like any forbidden love, I told myself he was a crush, and it would pass.
That was a lie. It never faded.
And I never expected he would fall for me just as hard.
There were so many reasons that should have kept us apart, least of all, the decade that separated us. Growing up in New York City, I learned early on that love is a double-edged sword.
Love broke up my parents, love took away my friends, and love — the big, intense, never-been-like-this-before love — landed me in therapy.
Now I’m heading to college, and it’s time to give love a clean slate again. But, can I really start over when he’s still in my life? Because the one man I’ve always wanted, is also the only guy I absolutely can’t have… And he wants me just as fiercely.
Can I settle for anything less than the love of my life?
Interview with Lauren Blakely
Schmexy was given the opportunity to get the inside scoop from Lauren about her new release 21 Stolen Kisses. Check below to see what she had to say…..
21 Stolen Kisses is such a unique and very different type of story then your more erotic novels. Where did the inspiration for Noah and Kennedy’s story come from?
I’ve always been drawn to the forbidden, and to the allure of slightly older guy-younger girl stories. (Now, this is where readers speculate about me inevitably – so just for the record, I was 23 when I met my husband!) And I wanted to find just the right angle to tell a forbidden love story. 21 Stolen Kisses has some mystery, some twists, and some personal growth as part of the backdrop to the love story, and that’s what I wanted — to have a forbidden love framed by the other aspects of a character’s journey, but to still convey the secrets, allure, longing and lies of the forbidden.
How important was it to write a story like 21 Stolen Kisses?
I’ve been in love with this story for many years, and I wish I could give a concrete reason as to WHY I couldn’t let it go. But ultimately, I believe it’s because this is a love that should have been impossible. But even in spite of all the reasons working against this couple, their love remained pure. They simply wanted the freedom to be in love without judgement. That’s why it was important to me to see it through — to show that this kind of deep and true love can emerge even when circumstances work against the lovers.
New York City culture, the Arts, and Theater are very present in this story, and many others in your collection. Are the arts/culture/theater something that you follow and are influenced by?
Absolutely! I draw a lot of inspiration from movies and musicals (like Kennedy and Noah). I adore romantic movies, the ones that give you a visceral, shivery, tingly response to what the characters are experiencing on screen or on stage as they fall in love. I often re-watch movies like Shakespeare in Love, or the final scene in You’ve Got Mail as I’m writing to try to capture those falling in love feelings that they evoke. And, like Kennedy, I was an art history major in college so I am drawn to including art and painting to some degree in my books. I am a HUGE fan of musicals — they are so full of joy and happiness and the good ones, the well done ones, are so transportive. Musicals like Billy Elliot, Book of Mormon, Chess, Rent, 42nd Street – they can give you the feeling of floating on cloud nine as you leave the theater! And I suppose, that’s a lot like falling in love, which is why I often find inspiration from theater and arts for my romance novels.
Tell us what’s next for you Lauren. What future projects can your fans/readers look forward to?
Next up is SWEET SINFUL NIGHTS on June 30th! That is book one in my new four-book series SINFUL NIGHTS. The first book is a steamy, high-heat, second-chance romance set in Las Vegas against a romantic suspense backdrop. The storyline is brimming with sin, sex, money, passion, greed and love!! Each book will follow a new couple, and the hero in the first book is Brent Nichols, the brother of Clay Nichols from Night After Night. Brent is hot, funny and a fantastic dirty talker!
And finally, what was the last book you read? We all would love to know!
I recently finished Spencer by Kerry Heavens. It was funny, sexy and fiery!
