LIVE YOUNG. LIVE HARD. LOVE DEEP.
Charley and Jake’s story concludes in Out of the Shallows…
Somehow, after everything they’ve been through, Jake Caplin and Charley Redford made their way back to one another. But finding each other and staying together are two completely different things.
When Charley’s world is flipped upside down, she begins to question the choices and decisions she’s made since her arrival in Edinburgh, and in an effort to grip onto what she holds most dear she believes she must sacrifice her love for Jake.
Returning to the States for her senior year, Charley struggles to find peace and happiness. While everyone else seems to be finding themselves in college, Charley is terrified that, along with almost everything else that’s important to her, she’s lost herself.
While friends and family deal with their own tumultuous lives, there is one person resolved to uncover the reason behind Charley’s sudden defection and unhappiness. Refusing to give up without a fight, Jake believes he is the only one who can truly understand what Charley is going through, and this time he’s determined to prove he’s there for her no matter what obstacles are thrown in their way.
However, as Charley strives to make it through the biggest personal journey of her life thus far, there is no guarantee that the woman she is becoming will still need Jake as much as the girl she once was did…
Here we are ladies. The last book that will tell us the fate of Jake and Charley. I don’t know about you, but I am in love with Jake and Charley. Into the Deep was…well it was Deep! From the beginning my heart was in pain, and I felt for Charley. You could feel her love for Jake the whole entire time, and all I wanted was for them to get back together, and back to that amazing love they shared; even if for only 7 or 8 months in high-school. It was different; they were different. So of course I was uber happy with the ending of Into the Deep and could not WAIT for Samantha Young to bring them together in Out of the Shallows.
But when Out of the Shallows starts off, again, I was left feeling empty and confused. and so mad! I couldn’t believe that I didn’t even get a little bit of Jake and Charley from the start in a happy place. BUT…the good thing was, I LOVE how Samantha Young goes back and forth from where the book left off and then switches to the now. Which is what makes me sad. Because in the now, Jake and Charley are NOT in a good place at all. And for once, I kinda want to ring Charley’s neck. But I’m not exactly sure why yet. I know Charley is going through something terrible and her family is dealing with the situation in the worst way possible. Charley is also being very friggin stubborn. Not sure I should be holding that against her though.
Out of the Shallows for me was so angsty that she leads us to believe certain events have taken place; which left me really fucking sad, and heart broken. Hence the reasons for Charley’s stubborness. I swear I wanted to jump to the last page just to see. But that is suicide! So I dealt with the heartache and read on. Torture it was I tell you. But so freakin
good and worth it!
Jake. What do you say about Jake? He’s perfection. He always has Charley’s best interest at heart. Jake has been in his own personal hell waiting for Charley to come around. I refuse to give away too much, so you will have to deal with my subtle comments here. But Charley knows, she knows Jake is in hell, and trust me, she feels guilty. As she should.
“Can’t you just be angry with me, resent me, hate me, and then leave it at that?
“Oh, I’m angry,” he said. “But I also love you, so the answer to that question is no.”
I sucked in my breath and looked away, willing the tears to fuck off.
“I’m angry at me too. Okay? I haven’t been able to face you because I’ve been dealing with a lot of other stuff. You’re just not a part of that equation anymore.”
OMG!! Really Charley??? What the ever loving FUCK are you kidding me? Jake is amazing! This boy loves you with every ounce of his being. He went through hell and high water to get back to what you wanted and needed him to be. And still…still he stands by your side. Even though he’s not yours now. Shit!!
Again, breaking my heart this book!! Oh that’s even the half! There is so much more in this book that will literally split your heart in two. Because that’s how I felt.
I cried 4 times reading this. Ugly cried. I hurt for Charley, sure I do. I hurt for Jake more. Way more!
“You really aren’t you right now, are you?
Frowning, I looked away.
“I’m me. I’m just not yesterday’s me.”
Okay just kick him while he’s down Charley.
Putting aside this disaster, for a second, let’s talk about Claudia and Beck. I just love their story too. If I ever wanted a spin off story, it would be Claudia and Beck! Hint Hint!! We get so much of them in this book, and honestly it never takes away from Jake and Charley. I got to know Beck better in Out of the Shallows, and I freaking LOVE him even more now!!! I NEEDED to know the rest of their story, like I needed air to breathe. Those two have their own epic love that needs to be told. Just saying. And sometimes Beck can be really fucking smart and give the best advise…
“It’s called sacrifice or compromise or whatever you want to name it. It boils down to one thing-what we’re willing to give up for the people we love. I thought you of all people would understand, Charley.” – Beck
WOW, that was powerful Beck. Which is why I love him too. And we can’t forget Lowe. I LOVE him too. What a loyal friend! I’ll take his story too.
In conclusion, let me just say, that Out of the Shallows, was hard to read, hurt me, frustrated me, made me cry, gutted me, and at the end I still give it 5 HOLLAS!! I enjoyed every last word! So worth the wait, but again, anything that Samantha Young puts out is Epic!!
