“I swear. Give me one more chance and I will make the most of it.”
Ex-escort Javier Landes is asking for his third chance at love. And the third time is the charm. He meets an art therapist named Steffen Finch and what starts as casual deepens into a passionate relationship—everything Jav has ever wanted, and everything he fears losing.
Stef’s business card reads Curator & Sailor. His creativity and insightful nature have made him into a talented therapist, the one to call for tough cases. His professional success can’t conceal a deep need to connect with someone, but Javier Landes is the last person Stef expected.
Geronimo “Geno” Caan is Stef’s most challenging case. To cope with his ordeal, he’s allowed an alter-ego called Mos to make decisions, and now lives a double life within a web of lies. Under Stef’s navigation, Geno uses art to express what Mos forbids to be spoken aloud. But as Geno’s attachment to Stef gradually extends to Jav, the boundaries between professional and personal begin to blur.
Over the course of a year, Jav, Stef and Geno form an unexpected and unconventional triangle, revealing how men make love in times of war and how love is a great wisdom made up of small understandings. The long-awaited second book of the Venery series, A Charm of Finches is an epic tale of survival and secrets guaranteed to make you think and feel and remember.
“Love is a great wisdom made up of small understandings.”
Love, loss, pain, healing, and incredible writing make up Suanne Laqueur’s latest masterpiece, A Charm of Finches.
I’m not going to sugarcoat it—it is real, it is raw, it will hurt, but god is it worth it. You will cry, sob even. But you will learn. Lessons on life, death, injustices, and healing.
This is a story that ties in Javier and Steffen who we met in An Exaltations of Larks. Although this could be read as a standalone, I can’t recommend An Exaltations of Larks highly enough—one of my all time favorite books.
Javier, the writer, the man who so desperately wants to find his way. The brilliant storyteller deserves his own happy ending.
Steffen, the healer. Heart of gold who works miracles with the victims he treats as therapist who has his patients use art as a form to express themselves.
The two meet and it’s as though the missing puzzle piece of their lives has been found. They fit. They love wholly and deeply, making your heart squeeze and your body tingle from the beauty they create.
Then there is Geno, the survivor. With a heartbreaking past, he has no idea how to survive or if he wants to.
When Stef begins working with Geno, their parallel lives become intertwined. I haven’t become this emotionally attached to fictional characters to this level as I have to the Stef, Jav, and Geno. My heart was completely torn open, broken, ripped apart, then put back together piece by piece. The writing is brilliant as Ms. Laqueur weaves a tale so intricate, so powerful, immersing me into the story as if I was watching it on a movie screen.
“…you deserve a beautiful life. You deserve an extraordinary person who you can trust with your heart and your soul and your body. And trust with everything that hurt and scares you, too.”
Not many authors would be able to master a story with this level of complexity and the incredible amount of sensitive subject matter it contains. Suanne Laqueur works her magic, just as she always does, and delivers a novel that will stay with you long after you finish the last word.
And Suanne’s words which to me, describe her own voice…
“You’re going to be a huge voice in the world… I think your story has a lot of power. It can be the kind of thing that… The kind of thing that builds an empire.”
