A deadly game of hide and seek.
With blood still on her hands, Samantha Matthews is on the run, running from dark secrets and a man she prays to God will never find her. Running and hiding, just to stay alive. She had no choice but to run, to leave, to hide and forget about her life before. When Samantha believes she’s gained enough distance from her past and her demons, she stops running, hoping to find her future in the heavily wooded area of the Adirondack Mountains, a place she never expected to encounter a man with secrets as dark and as sordid as hers.
Kade Grayson is hiding, not from the demons after him, but from himself and from the entire outside world, wishing every day he could have just died. Arrogant and domineering, he’s tormented and terrorized by his past, seeing nothing good for his future. With the ghosts of his past still haunting him, he has exiled himself to a life of solitude, only living for his words and through his stories.
An undeniable attraction, turns into hate and then ultimately obsession, an obsession that grows into a powerful story of love and redemption.
Will the bond they have begun to build between them grow stronger than the tragedies that have scarred both of their lives? Or will they allow their demons to consume them?
I am a romantic at heart. I love books that are sweet, sappy, full of angst, love and heartbreak complete with a happily ever after—or so I thought. Then I read Brutally Beautiful by Christine Zolendz and my view on what I thought I loved completely changed. She will rock your world and you will LOVE the ride.
Samantha and Jennifer are running. They are escaping—from the violence of Sam’s past, covered in blood and are unable to return to the nightmare they are running from. Him. The monster. They come across a bar—a strip bar, and although they hesitate at first, they rid their old identities and go for a fresh start.
So “Lainey Nevaeh” AKA Samantha, and “Bree Masterson” AKA Jen, and head into McSmexymelts and don’t look back. Even though they look like HELL, literally, they approach the bar, but no one is behind it.
“Wow. Impressive. Hairy McTittieBounce’s Bar has an invisible bartender…Well, Mr. Invisible Bartender, we need the strongest drink you can make.”
Low and behold, Mr. FREAKIN Invisible bartender rises up and he is BEAUTIFUL and HE HAS AN ACCENT…MY FAVORITE!!! “A bowl of yum!” He serves them a drink, ‘Adios, Motherfucker’, introduces himself and after talking for a few minutes, Dylan Grayson gives them some info on places to stay and offers them both jobs.
And so it begins. Samantha Matthews is gone.
“Life as I knew it was over.
Everything and everyone I ever knew…Everything I had ever worked for…gone. Just. Like. That.
Until one night Kade Grayson, yes Mr. Hottie Invisible Bartender has a brother, walks in and the fireworks explode. He stares at her intensely—like she was the only person in the room. He made her feel like a “porn star” and she liked it.
He is the complete opposite of Dylan. He is an enigma—dark, full of secrets and major issues. “An arsehole…vicious and savage.” Dylan warns Bree to stay away. But she can’t help the feelings she’s feeling. The pull. The thoughts she’s having. The way he makes her panties practically melt right off her body.
But he is an arsehole. He says shit that makes you wanna smack him or just shove the stick up his ass a little further. At some point—I don’t know how or why, I fell in love. I fell in love with Kade. He has so many problems, so many ducked up things wrong with him that I just wanted to bring him home with me and lock him up in my bedroom and heal him.
“I wanted to hate her, break her, and keep her the hell away from my sick, twisted mind. But, there was no point in lying to myself, was there? Because I wanted a taste of her even more. I wanted her.”
OMG. Do you hear my heart racing? I am a sweaty, bloody (insert fake accent here), MESS. He was so arrogant, so full of himself, yet I wanted to strip him of his expensive suit and get to know him better.
Lainey fights her feelings. He is a total JACKASS to her…treating her like a gold-digging, stupid waitress trailer trash.
At one point, she whips out a condom, throws it at him and says the BEST SCENE I’ve ever read in a book…
Lainey: ”It’s a condom, Kade, because if you’re going to act like a dick, you might as well dress like one…thanks for the pleasant visit.”
Kade: “Well, love maybe you are one step above trailer trash.”
Lainey: “Well, fuck me gently with a chainsaw and no lube. Thank you for the compliment.”
The banter was HILARIOUS—I laughed OUT LOUD repeatedly throughout the entire book. Yet, their stories were sad, broken, full of pain and horror and I felt my heart crack for both Lainey and Kade. They find their way and fit together perfectly in their own twisted, brutally beautiful way.
You will be SHOCKED at the turns of events in this book. Nothing can prepare you for the twists and turns and the HOLY CRAPS AND OMG’S that will be running through your mind as you read.
Christine is one of my favorite authors. I fell in love with the Mad World series and after reading her latest work, I can honestly say that she is just a breath of fresh air. She will have you glued to your kindle, mesmerized, absorbing every word. Lainey, Kade, Jen and Dylan were written perfectly. This book is a stand alone, but Cold Blooded Beautiful will be out shortly, and we’ll hear more from these amazing characters. I wish I could give Christine a standing ovation. You don’t want to miss Brutally Beautiful. Grab it!
