For Luisa Chavez, a twenty-three year old former beauty queen, a better life has always been just out of her reach. Sure, she’s had men at her feet since she was a young teenager but she’s never had the one thing she’s craved – security. Having grown up in near poverty, her waitressing job in Cabo San Lucas can barely let her take care of herself, let alone her ailing parents. Every day is another unwanted advance, every day is a struggle to survive.
When Salvador Reyes, the depraved leader of a major Mexican cartel, takes an interest in her, Luisa is presented with an opportunity she can’t afford to pass up. She’ll become Salvador’s wife and exchange her freedom and body for a life of riches – riches she can bestow upon her deserving parents. But Luisa quickly finds out that even the finest wines and jewels can’t undo the ugliness in her marriage, nor the never-ending violence that threatens her every move.
Soon, Luisa is looking for an escape, a way out of the carefully controlled life she’s leading. She finally gets her wish in the worst way possible.
As it is, being the wife of Salvador makes her an ideal target for rival cartels and there’s one particular man who needs Luisa as part of his cartel’s expansion. One particular man whose quest for power has destroyed lives, slit throats and gotten him out of an American prison. One particular man who will stop at nothing until he gets what he wants.
That man is Javier Bernal. And he wants Luisa. He wants to take her, keep her, ruin her.
Unless she ruins him first.
***WARNING*** This book deals with drug cartels and as such it contains a lot of sex and violence and some violent sex. It can get pretty ugly, pretty dark and pretty crazy. There is drug use, abuse, a bit of torture and dubious consent. The hero is not a hero and the villains…well, they’re even worse. If this sort of thing bothers you, PLEASE DO NOT READ IT. This ain’t no cupcake farting unicorn kind of book. If you are even a bit squeamish about violence, brutality and rape, this is your warning to stay away from a book that you certainly will not like (and why read books that you know you won’t like?)***
***While this is a spin-off of The Artists Trilogy, prior knowledge of the books is not needed. DIRTY ANGELS is the first in a trilogy, however each book can standalone and follows or introduces different characters***
Oh…this book, this man, and this dirty angel. What a story this was. I will warn you, it is not for the faint of heart. Javier is a bad bad man who does terrible things that will make you cringe….however, this did not stop me from loving him.
Meet Luisa Chavez. She is sassy and bold, a former beauty queen. She is a good girl taking care of her sick parents. Luisa is as unselfish as they come, everything she does is done for the people she loves. This includes marrying Salvador Reyes….Mexican drug lord.
“The life of Luisa Chavez was really and truly over. There was only Luisa Reyes now. And she was about to live a life of pain.”
Her life with him is miserable, as short lived as it is when she is abducted and taken to none other than Javier Bernal. This man is HOT, filthy, vengeful, a manipulator….shall I keep going? Ok…he’s broken, he’s miserable, he’s lost…..Javier is also a man that gets what he wants, the power he has is unreal. However, can one little harmless beauty queen change that?
“You are my enigma,” he said gruffly. “But I never leave anything unsolved.”
Javier becomes consumed by her. Watching him as he battled with his feelings, feelings that he didn’t understand, made my heart ache for him…for both of them.
“Luisa had become this ticking time bomb in my life, her presence and predicament penetrating my thoughts, whether I was away from her or not.”
The heat and the chemistry between Luisa and Javier was palpable….I could feel it in the air any time the two of them were alone together.
“Real power comes in giving a woman pleasure. Real control is knowing you’ve taken that woman to another place, another plane of existence, and your’e the only one who holds the key.”
“That man’s lips did things to my skin – shocked me, gently, with warm electricity – and I found myself wanting him to raise his head and bring his lips to mine.”
Their relationship was also quite confusing. Struggling with the reality of who each of them is was clearly not easy. Luisa was so innocent just a few months ago, in a matter of a few days she is even more lost than ever.
“I could survive him, his touch, his anger, his passion, because I was starting to understand him. I just couldn’t survive anyone else.”
I loved how Luisa looked at things, so innocent and pure but still so simple.
I pushed aside all thoughts about how unpure this was. Purity had done nothing for my anyway. It was better to be dirty. It was better to take what you could. It was better to embrace your lustful, needful, animalistic side because that was the side the lived.
I also quite enjoyed the progression of Javier’s feelings. This big strong powerful man, being changed by this tiny little woman.
“My darling. You’re going to be my undoing.”
However, this is a dirty book about bad people and it can’t all be hearts and flowers. There is always that twist, that shock…
“It seemed fitting for a man who loved to fuck so much that I had royally fucked myself over.”
You won’t believe where this book goes. And believe me when I tell you that hindsight is 20/20.
“I wished I had the guts to realize what she had meant to me, back when I could have changed things. Now it was probably too late.”
