New York Times bestselling author Sawyer Bennett has written her most gripping and poignant tale yet. Provocatively heart-breaking, audaciously irreverent and romantically fulfilling, The Hard Truth About Sunshine exposes just how very thin the line is between a full life and an empty existence.
Despite having narrowly escaped death’s clutches, Christopher Barlow is grateful for nothing. His capacity to love has been crushed. He hates everyone and everything, completely unable to see past the gray stain of misery that coats his perception of the world. It’s only after he involuntarily joins a band of depressed misfits who are struggling to overcome their own problems, does Christopher start to re-evaluate his lot in life.
What could they possibly learn from one another? How could they possibly help each other to heal? And the question that Christopher asks himself over and over again… can he learn to love again?
He’s about to find out as he embarks upon a cross country trip with a beautiful woman who is going blind, a boy with terminal cancer, and an abuse victim who can’t decide whether she wants to live or die.
Four people with nothing in common but their destination. They will encounter adventure, thrills, loss and love. And within their travels they will learn the greatest lesson of all.
The hard truth about sunshine…
Warning: This book deals with some tough issues including suicide and sexual abuse.

When an author that you love steps out of her normal writing style, you jump on it no questions asked. When I first heard about The Hard Truth About Sunshine by Sawyer Bennett I was hooked just by the synopsis. For those of you that are used to Sawyer’s style you will love this transition. This story has so much depth and self discovery it will leave you reevaluating your views on life.
Each character brings something different to this story. They are each unique yet connected by their group therapy and the journey they embark on. Let me tell you a little about each of them :)
Christopher ~ The soldier, battered bruised and broken. The eternal pessimist who’s pissed off at the world. He feels unworthy of love and is cautious in making new relationships, even just friendly ones.
Jillian ~ The girl with the sexy eyes who is losing her vision. With a plethora of medical issues and over bearing parents in her life she is still one of the most positive people ever. She’s the sunshine you will hear about when you read this story.
Connor ~ Ugh, Connor. Your heart will ache for him from the very first pages of this book. He has terminal cancer and does not have much time left. He is young an innocent and is trying to knock some things off of his bucket list. Connor is just the sweetest kid!
Barb ~ Hmmmm, what do I say about Barb. She comes across as an ice queen. Cold and heartless, doesn’t give a crap about the people she is with. At least, that was my first impression. Barb really grew on me as I read, which was shocking for me because my dislike of her was so strong in the beginning.
Quite a motley crew isn’t it? I didn’t see how this was going to work…at all. They all ended up complimenting each other in such amazing ways. Each of them learned to look at some aspect of their lives in a different light. We spend the most time with Christopher and Jillian, they were the heart of this group that made them all stick together and make the journey something they (nor you) will ever forget. Travel across the country with them and open up your own eyes to the possibilities that are waiting for you!
