My story isn’t a love story … not the typical kind anyway.
As a lawyer, I’m used to discovery, but I never saw this one coming.
Every day, River gives me ten reasons to stay away, and then eleven reasons why I can’t. Our relationship was to remain strictly business, or at least I tried.
Four years of marriage, and everything with Cole has changed. I never knew two people who lived together could be so distant. But I’m not ready to give up on him.
One man wants to break me.
The other is just trying to get even.
Both are lying to me.
**This is a standalone!**
“People claim each of us has a soulmate who we’re meant to be with. I don’t think that’s true at all. There are multiple people in the world each of us could fall in love with. How well you change together is truly what determines how long you’ll be together.”
That right there is an excellent summary of Break Even by Lisa DeJong. Lines are crossed in this book, decisions and life choices are questioned, feelings and emotions are pushed to the limit.
Marley was an interesting character. She’s well educated and has a great job, she’s gorgeous and married to what sounds like one deliciously hot man, Cole. Enter…River Holtz.
“River Holtz may not be one hundred percent asshole. There must be a percent of two of compassion in there.”
This man just sounds like sex on a stick, hard to resist but impossible to stay away from, that’s what he seems to be for Marley. Cole and Marley seem to have the perfect marriage on the outside, but is that what really counts? Neither of us really cared for Cole (don’t care how hot a guy is, there are certain behaviors and characteristics that are such a turn off) and River kept grabbing little bits of our hearts the more we read…he seemed to break down Marley’s walls as well.
“I hope I’m not making a mistake. River is company – interesting company – and he’s the only person who veils the problems nothing else can. He’s dangerous. His intentions aren’t good, but tonight is my birthday. I can be selfish if I want.”
We never expected what this story led to. The surprises and discoveries gave us plenty of WTF moments and had us yelling “How can that be?!” It was a journey of self discovery for all of those involved.
