The stunningly poignant and life-affirming debut novel by A.J. Compton
Imagine if we could see how long everyone around us had left to live. But we weren’t allowed to know our own numbers…
Trying to make sense of life after the death of her beloved father, free spirit Matilda Evans meets Tristan Isaacs and discovers a marrow-deep connection with him.
No stranger to grief himself, lonely artist Tristan is in awe of Matilda’s fun and philosophical approach to life. With every second spent in her presence, he finds his views on life and loss changing, and begins to embrace the beauty of being alive.
As their friendship turns into something deeper, lessons are learned, memories are made, and legacies are created.
But with both of them knowing how long their soulmate has left in this lifetime, important questions have to be asked and tough decisions have to be made before time runs out.
The Counting-Downers is an inspiring story about life, loss, love, and making the most of every moment.
“Love. Hate. Fate. Free. Evil. Life. Four letters can change, create, shape or end a life.”
Four letter words….they hold such meaning. The most loved and hated of this story, was TIME. The Counting Downers by AJ Compton made me stop and think. I’ll be honest, I wasn’t sure I was going to like the concept behind this book, I was proved wrong. This book had the feel of Bright Side (without the ugly cry), it made me want to embrace life and live it for all it’s worth.
Matilda and Tristan meet in an unfortunate way but it was always destined for them to meet. The chance meeting that much later turns to friendship and then ultimately so much more. The development of their relationship was slow, fun, realistic. Matilda is such a free spirited young woman and Tristan finds his way through her.
“Truly. Freely. Deeply.”
A true recurring theme of this book. Matilda lives her life by those three words and it makes for such a beautiful story. From their artistic abilities, to an AMAZING first kiss, through life and near loss we get a look at a true love destined to last forever.
“Know that you are in everything I will ever paint. You are every color choice, every stroke of my brush, every ounce of feeling the painting evokes. You’ll always be there.”
Take the time to read this book, it’s eye opening and heart warming. There are still good people in this world and Tristan and Matilda are two of those special people.
