On the surface, Lila Summers is flawless: good looks, expensive clothes, and a big, beautiful smile. But a dark past and even darker secrets are threatening to bubble over her perfect façade. She’ll do anything to keep the emptiness inside hidden-which leads her into situations that always end badly. Whenever she hits bottom, there’s only one person who’s there to pull her out: Ethan Gregory.
Ethan set the rules a long time ago: he and Lila are just friends. He doesn’t do relationships. Although his tattooed, bad boy exterior is a far cry from Lila’s pretty princess image, Ethan can’t deny they have a deeper connection than he’s used to. If he’s not careful, he could be in serious danger of becoming attached-and he’s learned the hard way that attachment only leads to heartbreak.
When Lila falls farther than she ever has before, can Ethan continue to help as a friend? Or is he also getting close to falling . . . for her?
Here we are, Book 3 of the Secret series. And now we are following Lila and Ethan, close friends of Ella and Micha. We know that in The Forever of Ella and Micha, Lila and Ethan become friends and have an interesting relationship and we learn how that relationship has evolved here.
Lila and Ethan are friends. That’s it, friends. But good friends, friends that help each other out, friends that spend time together, friends that do NOT cross that line. Ethan doesn’t do relationships, and he doesn’t want to blur the lines of his friendship with Lila. But she’s hard to resist. She’s beautiful in his eyes.
Truthfully this book is so much more than friends blurring the lines. I wasn’t sure where Jessica Sorenson was going with this story, and was excited to find out. But I was not ready for what she was going to throw at me. Oh no!!
What we get here with Lila and Ethan is way more than what I bargained for. This story is raw, this story is sad, and its reality. Even as I sit here and write my review, I think back to the way I felt while I read it. My heart was hurting for Lila. This girl is broken. She is sad, and broken, and needs some serious help. Lila does a beautiful job of putting up those walls and appearing like life is good on the outside.
“All I want to do is pop a pill and make everything I’m feeling go away. I want my confidence back, at least my fake confidence. I want my blissful, numb, never-having-to-experience-shame state because it’s easier than reality.”
And she deserves so much more than the fucked up cards she was dealt, and as a result of these shitty cards she lives a life of substance abuse and promiscuity. Her family is neglectful. Her father is absent of emotion, and her mother is a tyrant. Reading about these people and the way they treated her and the negative impact they had on Lila made me sick to my stomach. Thank god she has Ethan in her life. My god this book took me to dark places. I freakin loved it!! Reading about how Lila hits her bottom was hard. I cried for her. Yea I’m such a cry baby. And Ethan is there for it all! He sees her hit her bottom hard!!!!
“Please don’t what? Talk about what I saw last night? Because I’m not going to do that. It fucking scared the shit out of me, Lila…seeing you trashed out of your mind like that.”
Ethan is scared to death for Lila. You can see how he struggles with his feelings for her, not sure how to deal with all these new emotions. But Ethan has his own demons he must battle…demons he needs to let go. And because of this, he is so closed off, and not willing to move forward. These two are so messed up…they are broken together. Do two wrongs make a right? I don’t know.
But regardless if they aren’t sure of what they should be doing with their so called “Blurred Lines” they have an electricity they can’t deny. They need to be close to each other.
I just love the character development for Ethan. I was so surprised by him. He’s so loyal and caring. He handles Lila with care, because she needs it and gives her hope. OMG he gave me the chills.
“Be whoever you want to be, but please, please stop thinking so poorly of yourself. You barely even smile anymore and I…I fucking miss it…You have a very beautiful smile.”
Oh God Ethan, this is what I am talking about. I fell in love with him and how he loves and protects Lila. And Lila learns so much from him.
“God, half the time you drive me crazy. You challenge my patience. Piss me off. Make me feel things….That’s the thing, Lila. You make me feel things for you, even when I am fighting it. No one has ever done that to me.”
Of course we see Ella and Micha in this story and they play a big role towards the end of the book. Which I LOVE!!!
This book for me was so different from all the others. So real. So emotional. Jessica Sorensen is just the epitome what I call a best seller…this book just shows how she puts it all out there…The love, the loyalty, the hurt. I can’t wait for The Ever After of Ella and Micha and get the rest of the story. Love Love love this book!!! And I love Lila and Ethan!!! Totally 5 stars here!!!
About the Author
I’m the author of the Fallen Star Series, the Darkness Falls Series, the Death Collectors Series, and the New York Times and USA Today Best Seller, The Secret of Ella and Micha, a New Adult Contemporary novel. I love writing and reading almost anything that is YA. Some of my favorite authors are Cassandra Clare, Sarah Dessen, Becca Fitzpatrick, Abbi Glines, Tammara Webber, Jamie McGuire and Jennifer L. Armentrout. I’m also an avid watcher of TV series The Vampire Diaries and of Modern Family. I absolutely love music. When I’m writing, 9 out of 10 times I have music blaring in the background. My list of favorite songs could go on and on, since I have a very broad taste in music. But a few of my favorite bands are Chevelle, Rise Against, Alkaline Trio, Brand New, Death Cab for Cutie, Flight 409, Nirvana, and I’m going to stop there or else I’ll keep going on forever. I don’t really have any favorite movies, but a few that I could watch over and over again are Anywhere but Here, Juno, Pride and Prejudice, The Hangover, and Bad Teacher.
