Is that how a little girl sits?
How should a little girl sit?
Shoulders back and tummy in.
And how should a little girl look?
Always neat and pretty
That’s my girl.
Twenty-four-year-old Alexa Kennedy is beautiful, sharp as a whip, and at the top of her medical school class. She’s also been waging a war in her head for as long as she can remember. Depression. Hatred. Self-loathing. These feelings feed the pain inside her, fueling her quest for a perfection that she can never achieve.
In one life-changing moment, Dex Blakewell crashes into her world. Dex is funny, gorgeous, and irresistible. He chases away the darkness and fills her with light and laughter. An unusual friendship blossoms, making no demands or expectations.
Friendship turns into an unexpected love and a delicious passion. Alexa realizes that the only thing tethering her to sanity is their connection. But even Dex’s strength can’t keep her demons at bay forever.
When life overwhelms her, the outside world starts to mirror her inner turmoil. And when Dex discovers she’s been keeping horrible secrets, will she finally shatter or find a way through the darkness? Will the promise of love be enough to save her from self-destruction?
***WARNING: This book is for mature audiences and deals with topics and situations that some readers may find deeply emotional. That being said, I hope that many may find inspiration from these words. ***
This was my first book written by Lisa Eugene. I heard a lot of good things about her debut, Grayson, and was looking forward to read this story.
Alexa and Dex literally crash into each other one night. From an unlikely meeting, friendship grows.
Alexa is a girl with bright future and demons that are hard to fight alone. We learn some of her struggles from the start, but really there is so much more to this girl. Her need for perfection is self-destructing. Her secrets are bound to bring her carefully crafted existence down. Till she meets Dex, her only focus is medical school and her grades. As their friendship slowly evolves into love, her carefully crafted walls crumble down.
“A single – minded goal could be as destructive as it was rewarding, and losing sight of everything else was dangerous.”
It’s wonderful to see these two care for each other, to see them opening up more and more. Learning to trust and feel love, affection. Embrace their connection in the shadows of their secrets.
And once those secrets are out, its heartbreaking to see the struggle. Alexa’s life starts to unravel and it’s comes down like an avalanche. Dex is so amazing through it all—when it gets hard, when others may have run, he never stops loving her.
“We’d held our secrets close, allowing them to dictate the course of our futures, while nearly destroying our presents. Our secrets had burned fear into our hearts.”
Lisa Eugene paints a very real picture of mental illness and the stigma that comes with it. How incredible hard it is for families and loved ones not only to deal with the fall out but society’s backlash and lack of understanding of it.
This book deals with real issues. Self-esteem, pressure to be perfect, school expectations.
A beautiful love story of two people who didn’t know they needed each other, yet were meant to be from the start!!! While difficult issues are present, the author was still able to bring fun and hotness into Keeping secrets …
