What would happen if you lost everything? If the people who were supposed to love you unconditionally were no longer there for you, how would yourworld change?
Madeleine Becker lost everything when her parents died when she was ten years old. Ripped from her home and everything that she has ever loved, she is forced to start all over again. The only way for her to move on is to build walls around her heart and keep everyone at a safe distance. Her logic: she can’t get hurt if she doesn’t fall in love.
That theory is blown to pieces when she meets Reid Connely during her freshman year at college. He is gorgeous and darkly mysterious. He understands Maddy’s pain all too well, but sharing his pain would mean breaking down the walls he put up around his own heart. Conflicted between loving Maddy and hiding his dark past, Reid starts to reevaluate his world. Maddy’s inner strength, snarky personality and breath taking beauty help Reid to make peace with his past.
Together they find out what happens when they let love in.
Tragic histories join one another to overcome their pasts, a true love story.
Madeleine (Maddy) has had her share of loss in her life. Her parents died and 10 year old Maddy is sent to live with her only living relative, a 60 year old aunt. When her aunt also passes away when Maddy is a teenager she is taken in by her best friend Melanie and her mother, “Momma C”. Maddy has closed off her heart to love and breaks up with her boyfriend before she and Mel head off to college. She makes a promise to herself before they go:
“I made a few promises to myself. They’re very simple promises, but ones that I hope will wipe the slate clean.
Let love in.”
She falls right into the swing of college life (oh how I remember those days), meets new people, and goes to a party. It is at this party that Maddy meets the stunning Reid – 6’2″ of solid muscle, brown hair, and blue eyes – screaming schmexy! When they dance it’s like they are the same person, moving as one and just taking each other in. They exchange a knowing glance and Maddy sees something in Reid’s eyes that she knows oh so well….pain. And in an instant the dance is over and he stalks off. Maddy can’t stop thinking about him, he is in her dreams.
“I can feel his hands on my body. I can see pain in his eyes, and to say y curiosity, and my lust, for that matter, are piqued in an understatement.”
After a few unfortunate run ins and misunderstandings Reid and Maddy give each other a chance. He is amazing! He defends her honor, befriends Melanie because she’s the closest thing to family that Maddy has, and he makes EVERY attempt to make Maddy happy. I loved the playfulness that he began to show, sneaking off to meet Melanie to learn more about Maddy’s favorite things so that he can surprise her with the perfect first date *SWOON*!
They take things slow, Reid does not pressure Maddy. Their relationship grows as does his sweetness. They both of course have their doubts and insecurities that they try to work through. After Reid gives Maddy the perfect Thanksgiving/Christmas with her new “family” she knows what he means to her and they, well….I’ll let you figure out what happens next ;)
Reid gives Maddy things that she didn’t know she needed. But will one haunting thing from his past bring it all crashing down? My heart was racing to know what happened. Their love seemed so real and they were so good together. I cannot wait to read Let Love Stay, review to be posted next week!
