Flint Hopkins finds the perfect tenant to rent the space above his Minneapolis-based law office. All the t’s are crossed and i’s dotted on Ellen’s application. Her references are good. And she’s easy on the eyes. Until … Flint discovers Ellen Rodgers, Board-Certified Music Therapist, plays music. Bongos, guitars, singing—not Beethoven administered through noise-cancelling headphones. The cut-throat attorney serves up an eviction notice to the bubbly, constantly humming redhead who’s too sexy for her own good. But luck is on Ellen’s side when Flint’s autistic son, Harrison, takes an instant liking to her. A single dad can’t compete with guitars—and rats. Yes, she has pet rats. This woman … She’s annoyingly happy with a constant need to touch him—adjust his tie, button his shirt, invade his space, and mess with his mind. Still … She must go. Their lust-hate relationship escalates into something beautiful and tragic. This sexy, romantic-comedy explores the things we want, the things we need, and the impossible decisions parents and children make to survive.
“I want this life.”
Life is such a mystery…
So this will be one of those omg “I FELL INTO FEELS” rambling reviews so please bear with me 😱
I loved the cover of LOOK THE PART when Jewel E Ann shared it. It’s when the book came on my “need to read radar.” Then she shared the prologue and chapter one…and I was SOLD!! Flint Hopkins INTRIGUED ME, he DREW ME IN instantly!! I wanted to know more. I NEEDED TO KNOW MORE!! Heroes like him have that vulnerable/broken quality I’m drawn to. I want to unravel all their secrets. I just want to know them.
So I had high expectations from the get go and that feeling, when you just know that you picked up a book that will leave you a little bit different after you finish that very last page.. Aren’t those stories THE BEST??? The ones that change you a little, make you think and appreciate living this life a little more.
So back to the book, the prologue will kill you so be ready 😭 Chapter One is 10 years later….
We meet Ellen Rodgers, music therapist. Cheerful, enthusiastic and a little bit eccentric, odd even some may say. But if you have read Jewel before this is nothing unexpected, she has a knack for different. She is everything that Flint isn’t. Yet from that very first encounter something sparks. A little flicker of light. It’s almost invisible but you can feel the heat. You can anticipate the fire burning.
As the story unfolds I quickly learned both Flint and Ellen have tragic pasts that kept them from living life unbridled. My heart squeezed painfully as they start to open up to more pain as they explore the what ifs, a fling, a connection…. Maybe more???
“When people touch, they no longer feel like strangers. It’s a feeling. When humans share feelings, they connect on an intimate level. It’s why I love music. It can go deeper than words. Rhythm is the heartbeat of your soul.”
Flint’s son, Harrison, quickly takes to Ellen as a friend, which leaves things even more complicated as Harrison is not your usual 12 year old. I loved the father and son dynamic, it was complex and so well written. Jewel gave her readers a true glimpse into a unique family dynamic. I loved how Ellen fit into it all even as Flint fought the inevitable hard. Their love story is one of a kind, you go from boy meets girl to this peculiarly crafted and emotionally charged story that will make you hold your breath, shed some tears and puts a smile on your face. Jewel E Ann gives us stories that will make you read wayyyy past your bed time. Because you will be hooked one way or another.
Stories like this make me think about life, general… I always wonder why things happen, I believe in fate. I believe that everything happens for a reason but sometimes we will never find out what was that reason. Other times we do. Everyone we meet, come in contact with are there for a reason. Like Ellen and Flint. They had to meet, they had to find each other because life has a funny way of working out just when you start to believe it never will.
..life has a funny way of sneaking up on you
When you think everything’s okay and everything’s going right
And life has a funny way of helping you out when
You think everything’s gone wrong and everything blows up
In your face <– yes I totally quoted Alanis Morissette
So takes this journey with Flint and Ellen as they explore life with all its ups and downs.
Jewel E Ann will make you feel!! How can she make my cry one minute, then make me laugh while I still have tears in my eyes? She put me on an emotional rollercoaster and I loved every second of it.
“Sometimes the world ends and forgets to take you with it.”
Every single character (rats included) were perfection and are so hard to say goodbye to. I had to take a little time to read the epilogue because I wasn’t ready to close this book and move on from Flint, Ellen, Harry, the rat pack. But when I did I had the biggest smile on my face, I hope you do too when you finish it!!!
