Sometimes the right choice can be the deadliest.
When Ellie Watt made the ultimate sacrifice for Camden McQueen, she never thought it would be easy. But walking away with her ex-lover, Javier Bernal, in order to ensure Camden’s safety has brought a whole new set of dangers. With Javier’s plans for Ellie growing more secretive by the moment, Ellie must find a way to stay ahead of the game before her past swallows her whole.
Meanwhile, Camden’s new life is short-lived. Fueled by revenge and pursued by authorities, he teams up with an unlikely partner in order to save Ellie. But as Camden toes the line between love and retribution, he realizes that in order to get back the woman he loves, he may have to lose himself in the process. He might just turn into the very man he’s hunting.
Told in dual POV from Camden and Ellie.
To start I would like to direct you to my review of Sins & Needles (Artist’s Trilogy #1)…this review of Shooting Scars (Artist’s Trilogy #2) may contain spoilers if you have not read book #1 :) I also highly suggest that before you read Shooting Scars you read On Every Street (Artist’s Trilogy #0.5), it is the story of Ellie and Javier and it gives you vital information on their relationship.
Shooting Scars picks up right where Karina Halle dropped us in Sins & Needles. Javier has arrived to take Ellie away with him, leaving Camden behind with his estranged ex-wife and the son who barely knows him.
Ellie is thrown back into a life that she thought she left in the dust six years ago. Javier brings her right back to their old house…which seems to be exactly the same as when she left. So much so that I was kinda creeped out by her description of everything. Javier has an evil scheme that he needs Ellie to help him with, he is essentially blackmailing her into doing it. She needs to help Javier in order to save Camden.
Meanwhile, Camden thought he was getting a second chance with his son. Turns out he got ROYALLY SCREWED in this scenario and changes his plans. Now he is intent on finding his Ellie and saving her. My heart skipped a beat or two every time he talked about her. You could tell how much he loved her, that he had always loved her, and that he would do anything to get her back. He heads to Ellie’s long time friend Gus for help and thinks to himself…
Neither Ellie or Camden know what they are truly up against. Separately they find themselves headed to Mexico, each with a different plan. Ellie’s is to help Javier (and in turn get the revenge on the man who ruined her life when she was a child) and Camden (along with Ellie’s friend Gus) is on a search and rescue mission with not much information to go on. Trouble follows them wherever they go, they are both faced with battles along the way. Camden and Gus end up in a car chase and I laughed out loud when Camden says…
“I felt like I was in a deadly, real-life version of Frogger.”
As Ellie is basically being held hostage by Javier she is torn by her feelings for him, constantly thinking about what they had. Did she still love him…or would her hatred for him win? She was so back and forth I felt the need to shake some sense into her! He tries to smooth talk her in his own distorted way and tells her
…to which Ellie thinks
“I closed my eyes at his words, my soul and heart and everything getting sucked back into a vortex of memories, all bright, shiny, and good.”
She fell back into her old habits….meaning some OMG and rough sex with Javier. This does not stop Ellie from thinking about and worrying for Camden’s safety, having no idea that he is hot on her trail. You will NOT believe how this book ends! You will have to read it to believe it :)
This was a roller coaster of a ride that is for sure! I was definitely on the edge of my seat the entire time. Action packed and some schmexy scenes in between…perfect combination for a great book!
