He left to travel the world for fame and glory, but only after spurning Gabby Ward and crushing her young heart. Now Hunter Markham has come back home to the sand and salty breeze of the North Carolina Outer Banks so he can open up Last Call, a beach bar nestled among the dunes of the Atlantic.
Gabby Ward is not happy that Hunter has returned. Bitter over his rebuff years before, she’s content to stay far away from him and his dangerously charming ways.
Gabby’s well-schemed plans to ignore Hunter go up in flames when he presents an offer to her that she simply can’t refuse, throwing them together in a common quest to each reach their goals. Working together day in and day out proves to be problematic for Gabby, who soon realizes that the feelings she had for him are still very much alive. Hunter struggles to reach through to Gabby’s cold heart, all while starting a new career away from his life as a top ranked, professional surfer.
What starts out as a mutual business arrangement soon turns into a passion that neither of them can continue to deny.
Hard choices lay ahead for both of them when Hunter is offered a once in a lifetime opportunity to return to the pro surfing tour.
Choices that could destroy what they have built or take them further than they ever had dared to hope.
On the Rocks is set on a beach in North Carolina, that most certainly drew me right in. For those of you living near me in the north east of the USA you will understand why I needed this to help me get away!
We first meet Gabby and Hunter 5 years ago – Gabby has just graduated high school with her best friend Casey and they are going to let loose for the night. Casey’s brother is Hunter and he will be their designated driver/chaperone for the evening. My first impression was WOW, what an awesome older brother to do that for his little sister and her BFF!! The fun is quickly over and things between Hunter and Gabby will never be the same, her heart is broken. Gabby heads off to college and Hunter goes back on the pro-surfing tour (freaking HAWT!!!!!)
OK, so now we are in the present and Hunter is back in town. He “retired” and bought a local bar and will be hanging around for awhile. Gabby is also back in town and running her father’s construction business. Hunter needs work done on the bar and Gabby needs the job, perfect right, everyone wins? Yeahhhhhhhh…..maybe once hell freezes over. The two of them, well mostly Gabby, were just mean to each other. Hunter was such a sweetie and tried to make it all better, in more ways than one.
“Gabby Ward is under my skin. I’ve repaired my friendship with her, but I’m certainly not looking at her as a friend anymore.”
Gabby is a strong willed independent woman. She is the type of friend any girl would love to have. She is loyal and funny. Gabby is also protective of herself, guarding her heart from getting hurt again.
“Hunter Markham has the ability not just to hurt me. He’s a man that could destroy me.”
Anytime these two were in a room together I wasn’t sure if one of them was going to start swinging or if they were going to start going at it. Hunter seemed to have a solution for that though LOL
Things remain intense and Gabby has a hard time being nice. She’s been harboring these negative feelings toward Hunter for so long, who can really blame her. I wish that she had been able to open herself up to him and just BE NICE. Hunter is amazing and it made me sad when he felt like this:
“Having my body dragged over sharp coral reef seems less painful than having an actual conversation with her at this point.”
Wow…..ouch! This made me want to run away from Gabby. But, again, as I just said she is protecting herself. I knew she wouldn’t be able to resist him for long though. Come on, sandy haired surfer boy who owns a bar and is a sweetheart?? No contest there…
You’re not alone there Gabby…..I would have pounced him! And boy is she right about his words, Hunter sure has a way of saying things.
Are you swooning yet? Need some more motivation, here ya go…
“She looks at me, right this very moment, with heat and desire, and I have never wanted another woman the way I want her now. If I could freeze this moment in time, bottle this feeling and sell it, I’d be a fucking million ten times over.”
What an amazing man! Too bad it wasn’t working on Gabby….her bitchy (self preserving) side rears it’s ugly head.
“Oh God Hunter. Could you be any more of a girl? That was fucking, pure and simple. We both got off, and it was good. But don’t go getting on bended knee and turn this into a fairytale.”
What…..the…..eff?!?! I realllllllly wanted to slap this girl at this point. It made me so happy when Hunter took control and made her start to come around.
“Get naked,” he says seriously. “I really don’t think I can wait another minute. Oh, and this is going to be kind of rough and fast, but I swear I’ll make it up to you tonight.”
*Fanning myself*….H-O-T for sure but just as sweet…
“Don’t. Don’t ever hide what you feel from me. I love that you’re ready for me…always.”
The road that they have traveled to each other has been bumpy for sure. She has her dad’s business to run and Hunter has the bar and the Pro Surfing Tour. They are building something, but is it enough? These two have some serious thinking to do and huge decisions to make! I cannot wait for you to meet them!
“I’ve waited my whole life for you to wise up and love me.”
On the Rocks is Book #1 in Sawyer Bennett’s Last Call Series and as always is the case, I will be anxiously awaiting it’s arrival!!!!!
