Some mistakes from the past haunt us forever… unless fate steps in with a second chance.
One ‘dear John’ letter haunts Bobby Baker’s every living moment. It’s the letter he stupidly wrote to his high school sweetheart, Belle, right after he left to join the Army. The letter that he told her that he wasn’t so sure if they were ready for forever yet. But before he can let her know that the letter, and his second thoughts, are nothing but a mistake, she up and disappears from the small Georgia town they were both raised in.
Fifteen years later, Belle unknowingly walks back into Bobby’s life when her job as an ATF Agent forces her to work with a group of men secretly headed by the CIA to help her track down whoever is involved in funneling black market weapons to a drug cartel in Mexico.
Bobby will use this mission to try and soothe Belle’s hurt feelings while proving to her that their love is still meant for forever. He’ll use every dirty trick he’s learned since he joined the Army to maneuver her back into his life for the long haul. But Belle’s not making it easy as she keeps him at arm’s length in the hopes that mistakes of her own never come to light.
Schmexy Girl Book Blog was given an ARC of Secret Maneuvers in exchange for an honest review ;)
Jessie Lane has given us a story of young love, first love, broken hearts, and second chances.
Picture this, a young man and a young woman are deeply in love. He will be leaving for basic training in the Army and promises to come back for her. Who are they? Bobby Baker and Annabelle “Belle” Smith, high school sweethearts. Bobby is Annabelle’s whole world. He is the protector of her life, along with his family who cares for her as well. Sounds like a great beginning doesn’t it…things are great until he turns into a coward and breaks up with Belle, through a letter….a Dear John letter nonetheless (although maybe Dear Jane is more appropriate in this case).
Fifteen years (!!!!) go by and we are reunited with Bobby Baker. He is not retired from the Army and is part of a special ops team that is highly classified. Bobby is sexy as ever and had never gotten over the loss of Belle, the worst mistake of his life. At first I had hated him for writing that letter and copping out however when we meet him again I instantly changed my mind.
“Belle was my woman. The other half of my soul. An intricate part of me that had felt lost for far too long.”
Belle, who now goes strictly by Annabelle, and Bobby are brought back together in the strangest of situations. They will be working on a top secret case together, her as an ATF agent and him with his team of covert hotties. Annabelle is cold and short with Bobby, she has clearly not forgiven him (WHO WOULD) for abandoning her and moving on so easily.
Bobby has quite the jealous streak in him. He gets pissed at anyone that looks at her, even the new men in her life that are like family to her. Bobby is determined to talk to Belle and get her to take him back, he wants to make things right. I almost didn’t want that to happen. We can see that Belle is a strong independent woman that has moved on and made something of herself. She has a great job and people that care for her, what more could she want? Wellllllll….she wants Bobby Baker, at least physically. It seems that if she can get him out of her system they can both move on. Let me just say how much I enjoyed this part ;)
The push and pull between these two was intense. One second it felt like Belle was going to crack and take him back, but then she is keeping this big secret that will ruin everything, at least in her opinion it will. I will not tell you what the secret is but WOW was I surprised…like threw my Kindle on the bed and was like “A-HA!!” and things started to make sense.
Bobby is trying and goes to his Commander who we know as Jaxon. This man is nothing but straight to the point with Bobby, it’s like he is the voice of reason that makes Bobby see the situation clearly and from another perspective.
“You thinking you can hold onto your pride and win her back. Didn’t anyone ever teach you that love has no pride?” ~Commander Jaxon~
“I was damn well going to win the war and my reward would be her love.” ~Bobby~
There is so much more to this book that I can’t tell you without spoiling it for you! There is love, drama, and action all packed in to this story. And, to quote Belle’s favorite phrase, “Dag-gum” was this an awesome book!
