My name is McKenzie Perry. I’ve lived a life filled with secrets. Secrets that took me years to understand. Secrets that my bestie Gia and I kept from the world. Secrets that only I knew. I wasn’t afraid of the lies, the secrets, or the hidden skeletons. That’s not what frightened me. I was afraid that one day they would come out, somebody would find out the truth. If I am the only one that knew the secrets, the lies, then they were safe, right? How does a well-rounded, talented little girl create a false sense life? It took several years for me to understand the impact of lies. Lies I told, secrets I kept, and the lives they controlled. One of the things I know to be true is, I did the things I did for a reason, even if I didn’t know it at the time. They all had a reason.
“Freedom and retaliation. That’s what I waited for.”
Manipulation. Revenge. Deceit. Secrets. Lies…so many lies.
Wait…what?? Yep, that was pretty much my thought at every turn.
This story is insane. Mr. Nichols, Gia, and Mack… they’re incredibly twisted. Mack & Gia have been friends forever and will be friends for life. But do they know each other as well as they think they do? This story will keep you on edge. It’s emotional, it’s heartbreaking, it’s fierce, it’s mind boggling.
“That was when the wind chimes were so loud I’d wake up, clinching my chest, soaked in sweat. Sucking for air, I would heave. In and out. In and out.”
There is so much that happens in this book your head will be spinning. The story is intense, some of the content is just disturbing, and you can pretty much kiss morals goodbye. I really can’t get into the details of the story or every twist would be ruined. You need to just jump right on the crazy train.
“I didn’t know how to survive something like this. I didn’t know if I could.”
While this story is about so much deception, in the end, it’s also about people who are broken and being able to heal. As truths are told and revelations are made, my head was spinning. The act of forgiveness is huge in this story, and I’m not sure I could be the bigger person that each of these characters become. Or maybe they are all out of their minds. I feel like I’m questioning my sanity with this one.
Jettie does an amazing job of describing the thoughts and feelings. The feelings you experience while reading what each character is going through is intense.
“There isn’t a kiss in the world to compare it to. It’s like trying to teach a blind person the color of blue. How do you describe it? Ice? Ocean? The Sky? Or would it be better to describe the opposite? Red. Sometimes you have to see things the wrong way to see them the right way.”
Wow! Right? Talk about poetic.
I’m still shocked by this book, my head is still reeling with all the things that happened, the way everything unfolded, and the outcomes. I was captivated from the start and couldn’t put it down.
“You’ve been standing on your own your entire life. Lean on me for once. Let me be here for you.”
