As the captain of a schooner catering to the elite on the Caribbean Seas, Sebastian Stark does his best to avoid any human encounters. Interacting with people isn’t his thing, and he prefers the company of a bottle of vodka, a shot glass, and maybe a whore. There’s no doubt he’s hiding from a checkered past, but he does well keeping everything to himself…
…until the night his schooner capsizes, and he’s stuck on a life raft with one of the passengers.
Raine’s young, she’s cute, and Bastian would probably be into her if he wasn’t suffering from alcohol withdrawal. As the days pass, DTs, starvation, and dehydration become the norm. Even the most closed person starts to open up when he thinks he’s going to die, but when she realizes their traumatic pasts are connected, it’s no longer the elements that have Bastian concerned.
He has no idea how he’s going to Survive Raine.
I have made so many friends through blogging and it is so much fun because we all share the same love of reading. Heather from Love N Books and I were talking about our must reads. She and I made a deal we would each read each others top books and review them. I was lucky enough to have Surviving Raine by Shay Savage on my kindle!
The story is set out to sea on a small passenger cruise ship. At first I wasn’t really sure how this was going to play out, I mean this is a FULL SIZE book. How much could one person write about being out to sea? I was really surprised at how well the story played out. Sebastian and Raine were two characters I found myself caring about, and enjoyed reading their story. Plus I loved being in Sebastian’s head!!! For someone to be able to write about a situation like this and for as long as she did with no real secondary characters AND manage to keep people engaged is SKILL! I credit the author tremendously because it was all them all the time and she really did an amazing job.
Sebastian Stark the captain of the boat oh and he is an asshole!! A sexy, brooding, crass, man-whore who for some unknown reason I loved! I loved his dirty mouth and all his anger spewing out and I loved that he didn’t give a crap about it. He screws anything that walks; he is so rude and mean. He is out to sea on his boat and something happens to that causes the ship to capsize. He escapes onto the rescue raft and saves Raine from downing.
“How the fuck was I going to survive with this annoying, smoking hot bitch that I simultaneously wanted to fuck and kill?”
Raine is an interesting character. I am still kind of unsure how I feel about her. I don’t know that I would have continued reading if I didn’t love Sebastian as much as I did. I think it might have been different for me if I was in her POV, but since I was only in his head I felt kind of indifferent to her in the beginning. As time went on in their story I felt more drawn to her. She wasn’t whiney which was a HUGE plus, she cried a lot but honestly I think anyone would have in her situation. I think I admired her ability to be so steadfast. She was honest and stayed true to herself, as well as force Bastian to deal with things I don’t know he would have if it had not been for her. Raine made him a better man.
There were some things that kept me a little meh and I skimmed a little. Their entire situation was insanely coincidental. I kept thinking the odds of any of this were crazy, plus could Sebastian have any worse of a life? I had some moments were I was a little disturbed but overall I was able to look over that because their story moved really well. So onto their relationship, it was really steamy and volatile which is a bizarre combination. Remember he is moody and has a boatload of issues (pun intended) and some of the things that he said to her had me laughing but yet thinking “WHAT AN ASSHOLE!!”.
“Yeah, there is something you can do,” I said coldly, turning my glare at her. “Come here and blow me. That would probably ease a bit of my tension – especially if you swallow.”
However, their strengths are each other’s weaknesses and that allows for some pretty powerful things to happen for them.
“I love you… I’ll never walk away from you, Raine, I swear — I’ll be with you as long as you will have me.”
They have a really awesome build up, I loved that it wasn’t rushed. It fit and it was hot. Sometimes the prelude is better than the act and angst is always fun for me!! This is a series but you’re not left reeling, so those of you who are anti-cliffhanger would be happy where she choses to end the story!! I truly hope they can find their way through the storm and I can’t wait to see where their story leads. Thanks Heather for recommending!! xoxo
