Book 2 of the NSB Series.
Second chances are hard enough when you deserve them. Then there are the ones you don’t.
Callie asked if I was ready. And that’s the question, isn’t it? Ready for what? The spotlight? The music? Or ready for life. Ready to face the reality that what I was is going to attack the very fabric of who I am now. No one knows I’m a different person. Well, no one except the two most important people in my life, which is why there’s a remote chance I might actually pull off the comeback I never saw coming.
Then again, that was before Holland Drake crashed into my life. I didn’t ask for her. Heaven knows she didn’t ask for me. But sometimes it’s not about what makes sense; it’s about accepting that not everything will. It’s learning you have a choice when it feels like you don’t. It’s believing even the worst past can still have a future.
And sometimes it’s none of that. Sometimes it’s survival. A blind fight through the pain as you cling to any shred of hope you can find. And it’s those moments, those desperate pleas into the darkness for a flicker of light, when you have no choice but to confront the blessing that often feels like a curse:
You’re still alive. You’re still significant.
You’re once again Luke Craven, frontman for Night Shifts Black.
Roxie and Jen’s Review
If you haven’t read Night Shifts Black by Alyson Santos, please do not read this review as there will be spoilers.
“Guide me toward the light, I swear I’ll follow. Forgive me for the man I am. Fight the hollow ghost I carry. I’ve learned to hide the tears, Though they still break me. Search for me, the broken wanderer Find me, deep within my own void Save me, from my burning lies Don’t believe what I am.” -Luke Craven, Night Shifts Black
If you follow Schmexy you know by now that this year Night Shifts Black was our “SURPRISE FALL IN LOVE WE CAN’T GET ENOUGH” book. Alyson Santos’s talent totally blew us away as we hopelessly fell in love with her characters.
Tracing Holland continues where Night Shift Black left of and we couldn’t be more elated to have the gang back.
We left them in somewhat of a happy place after book 1, with a “we shall see you again” sticker on our brains.
Book two we follow OUR Luke Craven <– yes he is ours, as he continuous his journey of healing and battles his demons created by his past actions. It isn’t an easy fight as the darkness glooming and doubt rushes constantly in trying to take over his new found balance and glimpses of hope threatened by his self loathing. But he is fighting with everything he has and everything he is and we couldn’t help but fall even more in love with this brokenly amazing man.
“Am I ready? No. But I’m ok with that now. I’m ok, because for the first time since I can remember, I’m not afraid of myself. I’m not afraid of tomorrow. I’m not afraid to live.”
Holland Drake, lead singer of Tracing Holland, the band touring with Night Shifts Black. She quickly becomes something more, a ray of light on the dark skies. But is Luke ready to accept and embrace his second chance or will he crumble under the pressures of being back on stage and facing his past.
“I’m here because I’ve glimpsed the actual part that no one sees. The real part you’re holding back from the world. And I’m telling you, Luke, it’s fucking beautiful.”
Alyson Santos once again created a book where we became part of the story. We were on stage, on the tour bus… We were part of the story as we followed these bands on tour across America. We loved the friendships created in Night Shifts Black and seeing it becoming even stronger in Tracing Holland warmed our hearts. The banter between Luke, Casey and Callie, the love these characters have for each other is so real and authentic.
Luke’s relationships with his friends are so essential in his journey of healing. And the talent of this author just took his struggles and showed us that there is always hope no matter how strong the storms are. If you want to read a story that will make you feel a whole range emotions, make you think, give you inspiration… If you want a little insight of the world of music and touring, pick up these books by the amazingly talented Alyson Santos. You don’t want to miss out.

About Alyson Santos
I’m a writer, musician, and cat lover. I’m also an alternative music junkie. Seriously, totally addicted.
I write what needs to come out, whether it’s pain, tears, or laughter. I write people and relationships, about the beauty and horror of what we do to ourselves and each other. I write Love. Vengeance. Compassion. Cruelty. Trust. Betrayal. Forgiveness. Darkness, and the incredible way humans destroy and heal each other.
I like to eradicate barriers, refusing to be confined by the laws of physics or limitations of reality. I will befriend a vast population of possibilities and introduce them in ways that might surprise you.
