Twenty-four-year-old truck stop waitress and single mother Catherine Wright has simple goals: to give her five-year-old daughter a happy life and to never again be the talk of the town in Balsam, Pennsylvania (population three thousand outside of tourist season).
And then one foggy night, on a lonely road back from another failed date, Catherine saves a man’s life. It isn’t until after the police have arrived that Catherine realizes exactly who it is she has rescued: Brett Madden, hockey icon and media darling.
Catherine has already had her fifteen minutes of fame and the last thing she wants is to have her past dragged back into the spotlight, only this time on a national stage. So she hides her identity. It works. For a time.
But when she finds the man she saved standing on her doorstep, desperate to thank her, all that changes. There’s an immediate connection, and it’s more electric than the bond of two people who endured a traumatic event. It’s something neither of them expected. Something that Catherine isn’t sure she can handle; something she is afraid to trust.
Because how long can an extraordinary man like Brett be interested in an ordinary woman like Catherine…before the spark fades?
You know you have those books, the ones that peek your interest when they are released but then it takes you forever to get to them, or you may never get to them even. Well that was UNTIL IT FADES by KA Tucker for me. I loved the author’s previous works. The cover and the blurb caught my attention….. I just never got to it.. Till now AND I’M SO HAPPY that I finally did pick it up. I absolutely adored everything about this modern day Cinderella story. THE PLOT <– oh so sweet and realistic, an old fashioned love story till the very end. THE CHARACTERS <– every single one of them!! THE WRITING <– it was perfection. THE PACING <– slow burn baby I FLOVED THE BUILD UP!!
Catherine Wright is a single mom who had made some questionable choices as a teen. Now at 24, those choices are still shadowing over her as she struggles to make ends meet. One faithful night she saves a man’s life. Just to learn that he is no ordinary man but Brett Madden, hockey player God. NFL’s golden boy. Son of one of the biggest Hollywood stars. He is the epitome of fame and fortune.
One selfless action changes Cath’s life. She tries to keep her anonymity but soon enough she is thrust into the light and hounded by the media.
I loved Cath, she comes a long way from a bratty teenager who made poor choices to a strong, hard working single mom. Her daughter Brenna is her number one priority. I adored their interaction.
Brett, holy mister hottie. You cant help but fall for this guy. He is sweet and kind. Takes his time with Cathy. Understanding her hesitance and mistrust. The walls she built up to protect herself are not easy to scale. But Brett is smitten from the start.
“You know that no relationship is ever guaranteed.”
“Nothing good in life will ever come to you if you don’t take some risks.”
What I really enjoyed about this book that it isn’t just a love story. It was a story of a family’s healing and finding their way back to each other. A story about people who you meet along the way and they become more than family as you struggle to find your way. It’s about friends who will be there for you no matter what.
It’s about a small town that still has its old time charms and gossipy inhabitants. It’s about learning to trust again in yourself foremost. Catherine comes a long way with the help Brett’s support and patient pursue.
“It’s good to have dreams. Without dreams, we wouldn’t have goals. And without goals . . . what’s the point of living?”
They are an unlikely pair brought together by unusual circumstances. A modern day fairytale we all love to see in books, movies or real life. It’s happy and charming. A flawed heroine and her very own price charming comes to life in between the pages of UNTIL IT FADES in the most magical way.
