I married the right brother.
At least that’s what I tell myself at night, when I stare at the ceiling and listen to the rhythm of the grandfather clock down the hall. It never feels like the mere passage of time, but a countdown towards something inevitable.
Bobby Lightly is selfish, irresponsible, and careless. I haven’t seen him since the day I married his brother. He slipped out during the wedding reception without a word.
A year later, I heard Bobby was drafted to Korea. He never said goodbye to anyone. Never sent a letter. We had all come to terms with the fact that he was probably dead somewhere, either a victim of the war or its aftermath.
That is, until in the midst of an unrelenting heatwave, he showed up at the doorstep of the house I lived in with his brother.
Everyone thinks I’m cruel. Everyone thinks I should be easy on him. They think I don’t understand him. They all think I hate him.
But what no one understands is that it was Bobby who broke my heart.
And I think he’s back to do it again.
Roxie and Mo’s Review
This is not Roxie’s first adventure into the awesomeness that is Nina G Jones, and one of Mo’s favorite things about this author is how varied her works are. We had a feeling we were diving into something unique and different once again. We were also very excited to read a book in this time period. Set in the late 50s in the Midwest during one hot sweltering summer, lives are changed forever. The book almost plays out as a film noir. The author sets up the perfect and fully authentic background to this heart wrenching love story. Her world building was so skilled, you could almost feel the hot, sultry air as you were reading this story. Nina did an amazing job of turning the setting of this book into a character in itself.
Love is messy and unpredictable. And at times we make our choices out of obligations or because we think it’s the right thing to do. And sometimes we are wrong and the decisions we make will haunt us for the rest of our lives… We love how Nina depicted the changing roles of women in this time, as time when women wanted more, but were afraid to rock the boat. A time when antidepressants were coming into use, and many housewives turned to them to blot out their dissatisfaction with life.
We meet Lily in the summer of 1957. She is married, perfect housewife to Rory Lightly. She is clearly struggling with what her marriage became over the years. A knock on the door one hot afternoon and her carefully structured life turns upside down. The long lost, presumed dead brother in law, Bobby Lightly is at their door, and we just knew from that moment that nothing would be the same.
Bobby!!! Oh, Bobby… We felt it, that he was something special, but nothing could prepare us for just how amazing he was. We loved the tension between him and Lily, their story was unknown to us but their connection was crackling. We could feel the secrets hidden behind their carefully crafted facade.
As the story unfolds through present and flashbacks we learn of a love story so beautiful and powerful that years apart can’t diminish it. A love story that happens once in a lifetime, a love story that sweeps in your soul and gives you hope. Learning their story was a joy, but heartbreaking at the same time. Their love was soul deep, and the feelings and devotion between the two just bled from the pages. The obstacles they are facing are hard to overcome and it seems impossible at times. As a reader we fell in love with their love, and our hearts soared when they were together, and sank when they were apart.
“You are supposed to feel pain. You are supposed to be uncomfortable. That’s your soul telling you something.”
And they were connected, heart and soul. Their bodies made for each other, the sexy hotness between these two burned up the pages every time they were together. Nina G. Jones wrote the love scenes so perfectly, they were steamy and erotic, but still full of love. Their lovemaking was authentic and beautiful. The scenes never feel cheap, or thrown in there just to scandalize the readers.
“We had been in the shadows so long. Though there was nothing truer than how we felt about each other, it had relegated to a dirty secret. A lie. But now we could bask in the sun. In the light of a love so pure, it existed before we ever understood it. Before the world could ever taint it.”
But sometimes as you navigate through your own life, focusing on impeding hurdles, there is always the unseen outside force that is involved, things set in motion… For every action, there is an equal reaction. With every decision we make, someone will be affected, and sometimes the consequences of our actions are beyond our control. This story played out in a way that we never could have imagined. The journey we took with Lilly and Bobby was uplifting and heartbreaking, brought out the full spectrum of emotions right there on the pages. Our mixed feelings are all tangled up, struggling to move on from the lake house where it all began. And we can’t help but wonder about the road not taken on that fateful day, where it all started, when everything was set in motion with two words… I DO.
Nina G Jones crafted more than just a romance, it’s a tale of true soul mates, and it’s one we will cherish forever….
“… since before I even knew what it was. “
