Our Q & A With Sybil
Schmexy: So why writing? How did you get started and was this something you always wanted to do?
Ohh, I love this question! Why writing? I love to read, like truly, madly, deeply, love it. And when I was about 12 years old, I thought how fun it would be to write a fictional book about the Sibyl (in Greek mythology, the Sibyl are Seers) but I never wrote it. Instead, I grew up and went to art school then somehow wound up in corporate America and had a whole other career. Then one day I wondered why I’d never written that book. I foolishly thought, how hard can it be? So I decided to give it a try. No writing experience, no classes, no idea what I was doing, I started writing. Two years and over 270,000 words later (that’s three times the length of an average book, lol!), the book was done. And it was awful! But I still queried it to over 170 places and after 170 rejections, I decided to write another book, but a very different kind of book. I had learned from my first attempt at writing that what I really enjoyed was creating sexy Alpha heroes and I loved writing their character interactions with the heroines. I also discovered I love writing male POV. (I found it easier than writing female POV.) So I wrote an all male POV rocker romance. That book only took six weeks to write (but many months to edit!) and it became my first published book.
Schmexy: How long did it take you to write each book?
I now average about three months to write a book. I am actually an incredibly slow writer. I never plot or outline, I pantster every book (which means I make it up as I go). I also edit now as I write. This way, I don’t spend a huge amount of time after the first draft correcting mistakes or fixing major plot holes.
Schmexy: Where do you get your ideas?
Okay, this is going to sound crazy, but all of my book ideas have come from that first book I wrote that was never published. That first book had a side character and he became the hero of my first published book. Eight (almost nine) books later, every hero in each of my books has been a friend of that first character or a friend of a friend. There is actually a tremendous amount of character cross over in all of my books. And one of my characters has been in every one of my books so far! (I’ll give you a hint: he likes to surf!)
Schmexy: Who is your favorite author and what is your favorite book?
It is SO difficult to name a single favorite author and a single favorite book! For me, I have favorite moments in books. I may forget an entire book but remember a single brilliantly written moment and those moments are what stand out to me. Right now, I am thinking of Courtney Cole’s IF YOU STAY. The opening scene is the hero overdosing while getting a blowjob (omg, can I say blowjob here?!) from a crack whore. The scene is so visceral and shocking and appalling and yet, you fall head over heels in love with this damaged character. I don’t know how Courtney Cole did it, but it’s a brilliant book. And for some reason, mentioning that book reminded me of CD Reiss’s SPIN, where the second time the heroine meets the hero, he is beating the hell out of another man while making him eat another person’s vomit. (Omg SO gross!) The scene is as shocking as it is disgusting and I don’t even know how you can come back from that and make the reader fall irrevocably in love with the hero, but CD Reiss does it! You will love Antonio in SPIN, I promise!
Schmexy: What inspires you?
There are three things that inspire me to write. The first is every day sexy moments, either between two people or simply seeing a confidant man with a swagger. (Truth moment: I love people watching!) The second is the unlikeliness of an idea; something that shouldn’t work but does. Like a male/female romance only told from the hero’s POV (NO APOLOGIES and TALON). Or a preacher’s daughter falling in love with a male escort (ROUGH). Or an entire romance book where the hero is so Alpha he never says I love you. (Okay, total spoiler moment but yes, I did this in NEIL, so fair warning, LOL!) Or a laid back surfer who smiles at every woman he meets but is dying on the inside (TALON). I love all of these unlikely ideas! And my third inspiration is our military heroes. My husband is a vet and so is his father. I have a tremendous amount of respect for the men and women who serve in our armed forces and have served. All of my heroes, except for one, are vets or active duty military. So that’s my cocktail of inspiration; seemingly unlikely ideas, sexy moments of intimacy and super alpha behavior by military heroes – mix it all up, add the suspense that surrounds super alpha heroes, and you get my stories!
Schmexy: So, what’s next?
I am finishing the third book in my male escort series. It’s called GRIND and it’s about a male escort who’s lost all boundaries in his life, except one, and what happens to him when he breaks that last boundary. Then I have the third book in my romantic suspense series, ANDRE, coming after that. Andre is an ex Marine and is the owner of a personal security firm. He’s been a reoccurring character in several of my books and he’s the one person my heroes always call when they need help. But in his book, Andre is going to have the tables turned on him! After that, I have a new super secret series coming, (think sex and money and lots of Alpha-ness!) that I will be announcing after ANDRE releases
I’m not your boyfriend. I’m not the guy next door. I don’t even play nice.
My hands twisting in your hair, my whispered demand in your ear—I’m the fantasy you’ll wish you never had.
When I’m through with you, every inch of your body will know where I’ve been. Your only thought will be the insatiable ache between your legs as my name drags across your lips. You won’t crave more, you’ll beg for it. Because I’m not just a cocky smile with military hardened muscles you paid five grand for—I’m the experience you’ll never forget.
One night with me and you’ll know exactly why women pay me to be rough.
Hot and unputdownable, Rough by Sybil Bartel was everything I was searching for.
This is the second book in the Thrust series and if you thought Alex was delicious, wait till you meet Jared.
Jared likes it rough–domination is his game–the rougher the better. No love and affection from this guy–he plays hard and fucks harder.
As an escort, he keeps his heart unattached and the ladies coming back for more. Just the way he liked it.
Until he meets Sienna. Sweet, innocent, beautiful Sienna who had no idea what she was getting into when she agreed to dinner with the one and only Jared Brandt.
I’m surprised the chemistry from these two didn’t short circuit my kindle. Just when you think he can’t push her boundaries any further, he does and HOLY JESUS, it was panty-melting.
“You wanna walk on the wild side, this is how it’s gonna work. I touch you when I want, where I want.”
And God do you fall harder and harder the more you read. Jared is the perfect broken boy who you want to love and lick and keep for yourself. Sienna is the perfect match for him, having been hurt herself, she is cautious but sees him for what he really is.
As they try to work through their
Sybil Bartel, well damn, how to write and not just the sexy times. She has you feeling these characters’ pain and she creates the perfect amount of angst that has you drawn in dying to know what’s to come.
This was the second book I read by Sybil and I’m thrilled to say I’ve found another go to author.

About Sybil Bartel
Sybil grew up in Northern California with her head in a book and her feet in the sand. She used to dream of becoming a painter but the heady scent of libraries with their shelves full of books about wistful summer days and first loves drew her into the world of storytelling.
Sybil now resides in Southern Florida and while she doesn’t get to read as much as she likes, she still buries her toes in the sand. If she’s not writing or fighting to contain the banana plantation in her backyard, you can find her spending time with her handsomely tattooed husband, her brilliantly practical son and a mischievous miniature boxer…
Here are ten things you really want to know about Sybil.
She grew up a faculty brat. She can swear like a Sailor. She loves men in uniform. She hates being told what to do. She can do your taxes (but don’t ask). The Bird Market in Hong Kong freaked her out. Her favorite word is desperate, or dirty, or both, she can’t choose. She has a thing for muscle cars. But never rely on her for driving directions, ever. And she has a new book boyfriend every week—don’t tell her husband.
To find out more about Sybil, visit her on Twitter to see what she’s up to. Commitment phobic until she met her husband, she loves those little 140 character snippets.
Or check out her Facebook page, if, you know, you’re feeling more wordy.
