Our Q & A With K.k.
Schmexy: So why writing? How did you get started and was this something you always wanted to do?
I started writing at nine-years-old. It was a way to escape, to daydream, and to create. But I never thought of writing as a career. It was something I did for me.
Before I could fully read I was copying the words from children’s books onto my mom’s old typewriter. By the time I was twelve I was filling spiral notebooks with full length novels. Funny enough, even when I was writing story after story, I never considered writing professionally. Fear gripped me anytime I thought of letting someone read my work. I’d find secret hiding places for my notebooks and go to dance class and dream of being a professional dancer instead. In 2002 I met Nicholas Sparks, and that pretty much changed everything for me. He humanized the publishing industry and inspired me to take my writing seriously. Twelve years later, thanks to self-publishing, I finally let go of my fear enough to put out my first book. Many mistakes later, here I am!
Schmexy: How long did it take you to write each book?
It takes me longer to plot and edit a book than actually write it! I can write 80,000 words of a very rough draft in two months, but I’ll spend a good month prior on the outline and plot elements. During my rewriting stage, I usually add a lot to the story (plot holes, descriptions, extra chapters). I also tend to drift away from my original outlines as I’m shaping the story, so rewriting is always my favorite part. I’m blessed to have an editor who is brilliant and makes sense of my crazy creative process.
Schmexy: Where do you get your ideas?
My experiences and memories of growing up have had a lot of influence in the stories I tell. There’s an innocence to life when we’re younger that I love exploring. I think that’s why all my books have a “Coming of Age” element to them. Up in the Treehouse was inspired by a scene in one of my YA Fantasy books, The Descendants, but that particular scene was inspired by a memory of two brothers who tried to build a treehouse in my backyard when we were kids. That’s really as basic as it started. But with Under the Bleachers, the characters and title came first, and then the story was created through plotting and character development. I’m not entirely sure what works best for me. But I do know when an idea is so strong I have to tell it.
Schmexy: Who is your favorite author and what is your favorite book?
Nicholas Sparks is always at the top of my list because of the influence he’s had on my own writing. Not to mention his beautiful words, and crafty storytelling. While my writing style is different from his, I do think there are similarities in the way we shape our stories, as an experience for the reader, always keeping them on their toes, ha! There’s a reason his novels translate so well to the big screen. As far as my favorite book, I have so many! But A Walk to Remember was the first book that truly gave me “all the feels” and that is something I’ll never forget.
Schmexy: What inspires you?
Life! Memories, music, food, the places I visit, and people. One of my favorite parts of the writing process is drafting backstories and getting to know the intricate details of each character. I need to know everything about them, including the details they may not know themselves. Everything I write is based on my experiences because those are the things I know best. I’m a horrible liar. If I ever wrote something that didn’t feel authentic to me, then it probably wouldn’t feel authentic to my readers.
Schmexy: So, what’s next? Can we get a hint?!
Haha. If you read Under the Bleachers there’s a huge hint ;) I also announced the working title in my fan group, Forever Young, not too long ago in a live video. That one will be released in 2017. I’m also working on something a bit different; a Romantic Suspense, which will be released early 2018 if all goes well.
