Brody Markham has endured a nightmare, spending the last five years in prison and losing everything that was dear to him. Now he’s back home, trying to survive in a world he doesn’t recognize anymore. While his family and friends desperately try to reach through to him, he shelters himself further and further away from their love.
Alyssa Myers has worked her entire life to distance herself from the luxurious and privileged lifestyle in which she was raised. Running her non-profit agency, The Haven, she is content to spend her days helping abused animals find sanctuary, which fulfills her in a way that money just can’t buy.
Maybe it’s that she recognizes in Brody some of the same characteristics she sees in her homeless wards, but Alyssa is powerless to stop her personal quest to make Brody whole again.
While Brody struggles to surface from the darkness, Alyssa tries to protect her heart in case he’s not willing to accept the light that she offers him.
I am SO excited to bring you yet another amazing book by Sawyer Bennett – Make It a Double….I may be borderline obsessive when it comes to her writing. This time around I am happy to introduce you to Brody Markham…the sexy identical twin to Hunter from On the Rocks (Last Call #1). This can be read as a stand alone but trust me when I tell you that you want to meet Hunter as well…seriously…TWINS!!
Anywho….Make It a Double brings us the story of Brody and Alyssa. He’s a sexy ex-con and she is the rich girl, or at least that is what he remembers about her from their youth.
Well, you can’t judge a book by it’s cover. Alyssa is really a down to earth girl who uses her inheritance money to run a non profit animal shelter, that she spends most of her time running.
“Much to my parents’ chagrin, I turned into a person that was content to eat Burger King every day and clean up dog shit for the rest of my life.”
Brody is still trying to adjust to life outside of prison. I could just see that he was trying to overcome his struggles, he wants to fit in again and be happy. He has been pushing everyone away, being broody and sulking all the time. It was almost like it was easier for him to just remain in his shell.
Alyssa has such a big heart and she can see the goodness that lies beneath, I thought that she knew him better than he knew himself. She seems to know just how far to push him to help him move forward.
“I do this because I think Brody needs this. He has finally stepped across the line he had drawn in the sand that kept him closed off and removed from the real world. He needs to be able to do something worthwhile, and he needs to be able to open himself up to emotion. If this is the way in which he wants to take that step, I’m not going to hold him back.”
I loved how they just melded together, they could be friendly yet flirt. They were taking things slowly, although that didn’t stop Alyssa’s imagination from running wild…
“For a moment, Brody doesn’t move, and I have all sorts of pornographic images shoot through my mind. Of him pulling my body back into his, bringing his arms up around me and palming my breasts. Of him dropping a hand down the front of my pants…”
Brody and Alyssa have this gentle playfulness with each other….they can be silly yet completely honest with one another.
“Adorable is absolutely not a word you’d use to describe an ex-con.”
“You’re right,” she says with a grin. “Ex-cons are definitely not adorable. Smokin’ hot? Yes. But not adorable.”
And sexy….don’t forget how absolutely sexy these two are together….
“Don’t even tell me to stop,” I tell her darkly. “You had your chance. Now it’s gone.”
“I don’t want you to stop,” she tells me breathlessly. “I want you to touch me.”
Brody is so hard on himself…his past still haunts him and he doesn’t feel deserving of the positive things in his life. With help from Alyssa his views begin to change.
“I think I got tired of being in the darkness of misery. I decided to try for something good.”
“I deserve you, and I have you. Not letting go, so get used to it.”
He realizes what he could have missed out on….
“…the thought that I could have missed this opportunity to know Alyssa makes my stomach twist. The though of me not knowing her is excruciatingly painful.”
Alyssa stands by Brody through it all.
“He may be brooding and reflective, but he’s got determination in his eyes, and I’m going to follow along until he’s ready to reveal his thoughts to me.”
Will it be enough for them to stay together, can Brody accept the love of not just Alyssa but all of those around him? Well….click the link below and READ THIS BOOK!! In fact, read BOTH of them!! This is another series I will continue to follow!!
Brody!! I am so glad you could meet me today! I have a few questions that I have been waiting to ask you :)
What was it like having an identical twin growing up? I can only imagine the trouble you and Hunter got into!
Man, it was great being an identical growing up. We never pulled too many switch jobs, because that was too obvious, but once, I can tell you, there is a certain level of appeal that twins have to let’s say the female persuasion. Hunter and I may, or may not have, dated the same girl at the same time… if you know what I mean.
So hard. It’s like working an eighty hour a week job and it’s really competitive. You’re always striving to be at the top of your class. I think my first year, I was functioning on maybe two to three hours of sleep a night. It was tough but I loved it. I miss it a lot, you know?
What was it like coming home after 5 years in prison? What did you expect?
As you can imagine, it was wonderful being out of prison, but I’m not going to lie. It was torture too… trying to reacclimate to life on the outside. The hardest thing at first for me to get used to was living in a world where I didn’t have rules to govern every aspect of my life. When I went to sleep, when I ate, showered, when I woke up. Everything was so structured, that for awhile, I floundered with trying to figure out something as simple as what I’d make for dinner at night.
We hear your explanation as to why you were so mean to Alyssa, but why were you really like that to her, is there more?
You pretty much got the gist of it. I equated all of the terrible things Stacy did to me to the fact that she was rich and entitled. I mean, people in my world didn’t do stuff like that to each other. I just assumed since Alyssa was rich, she would be the same way. I probably wouldn’t have reacted so viciously to her if I wasn’t attracted to her. Otherwise, I could have just ignored her. But damn… I wanted her from the get-go and that made me feel like such a fool for wanting someone that I was pretty sure was no good for me. Obviously, I couldn’t have been more wrong about my sweet girl.
Where did you get your love of animals from, you fit in at The Haven so well, it comes so naturally.
We always had dogs growing up, so I just love them. And at a time when I was coming out of prison, and having a hard time trusting people, it was extra nice to be around them at The Haven. Dogs have such a pure spirit and such unfiltered love. It was nice feeling that without having to worry about whether or not I was deserving of that type of attention.
What is your favorite characteristic of Alyssa’s, what draws you to her?
Alyssa’s drive is my favorite characteristic. Obviously, she has a heart of gold, but what I admire about her… what I respect the most, is that she works hard for what she has and doesn’t rely on anyone but herself. That sort of confidence and independence is sexy as hell, don’t you think?
Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
I truly think my life is on the right path. I think after everything I’ve been through I am finally getting my heart’s desire. That means Alyssa, and of course, five years from now… that means we’ll have at least one baby, maybe two if we get busy. I’d like three kids total and Alyssa’s on board with that.
